SHELBYVILLE, IL. — What can I learn from the elderly?

Three or four times a year I have the honor of preaching at a local nursing home, Shelbyville Manor. When I am preaching to this group I cannot help but think; “What can I tell them that they do not already know?” So this last time I went there I gave them a homework assignment to give wisdom to those in the younger generation, which they thought was funny since they have not had homework in decades. Here is what they said.

About marriage:

“Treat each other nice. Give a lady a lot of attention. Our wives needs are more important than our own.”

“Living on a farm is a plus.”

“Give and take. Stay best friends.”

“Have respect for another.”

“Stay in love with each other and have respect. Always remain friends.”

“Couples should stay away from arguments as much as possible.”

“Be compatible with your spouse. Do fun and exciting things with one another.”

“It’s important to have love, loyalty, and respect.”

About Children:

“Teach them right from wrong. Let them learn their own lessons.”

“Learn to be a parent before a friend.”

“Give them lots of love.”

“Consistency is key.”

“Teach your children to respect their elders and you as a parent.”

“Make sure that both parents have input in the child’s life.”

“Be an example for your child.”

“Jesus gave us our lives. If parents don’t pick up on what is right and wrong the children will never find it.”

About Religion:

“Read your Bible, believe it, trust it, and live by it because it is the truth.”

“Go to church on a regular basis.”

“Religion is very important, get involved in it.”

“Religion is important in a marriage.”

“Religion is important to get through life.”

“Pray regularly and live life to it.”

“Take children to church from birth. Religion helps you get through life everything that comes in life.”
