Technology at Windsor Schools

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — By Gretchen Neal

Over the past year, many new technologies have been introduced to our school district, and our district wide technical specialist, Mr. Bruce Brewer, sat down with me and explained just how technologically advanced our school is.

When asked about the new technology, Mr. Brewer said that some of the newly implemented equipment and tools include SMART Boards in many classrooms, handheld response systems, wireless air slates, laptops, five new iPad2 units, brand new subscriptions from World Book Online and United Streaming, and the STI Parent Portal. SMART Boards, which can be described as something like interactive whiteboards, have been installed in well over half of the rooms in the high school and in all of the rooms of the grade school.

With the SMART Boards, several handheld devices that allow for paperless tests and learning activities have been programmed and installed to our computers and Boards, including the wireless air slates, which allow the user to use the Boards from across the room. These devices save on paper, are good for the environment, and save teachers time by automatically grading the tests and activities.

Another new installment, Mr. Brewer said, was a new subscription to World Book Online and United Streaming, both of which are educational resource websites.

Another advancement is the STI Parent Portal, a web site that allows one to view their children's grades and missing assignments, which, needless to say, is very helpful.

It looks as if Windsor has come a long way from the chalk-and-blackboard days, and it is still improving.
