SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
What is a Gospel and why are there four of them?
The word gospel simply means “good news.” The four gospels in the bible are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and are placed in the very beginning of the New Testament. The Good News they share is the story of Jesus; his miraculous birth, his sinless life, record miracles he did and things he said, how he paid for our sins on the cross, and rose from the dead because no grave could hold him.
The reason there are four gospels is simple, Jesus had many people follow him and these men wrote down what they saw and heard about him. Think of asking four people after a football game to recall details of the game. Each person would give the same general account of the winner or loser, but depending on their seats, who they were with, if their team won, if they knew a player, and their emotional connection to the team, their answers would vary but with the same general outcome. This is the reason there are four gospels, each account has a different distinct reason for writing and way they present Christ.
Matthew is written to link the Old Testament and the New, showing that Jesus is the Messiah that the Jews had been looking for. In Matthew, Jesus is presented as a king. Mark is written to show what Jesus did, and is presented as a miracle worker. Luke is written to give an orderly and detailed account of his life, giving more attention to women, poor and the outcasts, while presenting Christ as a man. Lastly, John was written so that whoever reads his words may believe in Christ while presenting Christ as Son of God.
