Newlin trial set for Sept. 24

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — A Herrick man charged in the shooting death of another Herrick man in December made another pretrial appearance Monday in Shelby County Circuit Court.

Wayne Newlin, 52, is charged with three counts of First Degree Murder - Accountability in the death of Jeremy Morgan on December 29, 2011. A second man also charged with First Degree Murder in the case pled guilty in July and is serving a 45-year sentence.

Conflict Public Defender Walter Lookofsky told Judge James Roberts that he has received additional discovery but has not had a chance to review it.

“But I’ll still be ready for trial,” Lookofsky said.

State’s Attorney Deborah Riley noted that she has not received disclosure from the special investigator that Lookofsky had arranged with the court. Lookofsky said that he will provide the visual disclosure to the State as soon as he receives it.

Roberts set a final pretrial for September 17. Newlin’s trial date has been set for September 24. He remains in custody in the Shelby County Detention Center.
