SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Local artists will have the opportunity to showcase their crafts in downtown Shelbyville.
Shop owners will host artists in front of their stores for the Summer Art Breeze, Saturday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Ten artists have committed to being here,” said organizer Kathy Mulvaney, owner of Shelbyville Connection.
Mulvaney came up with the idea as a way of bringing more people into the downtown area. Other store owners are cooperating, offering their store fronts for artists to set up their work
“We have a huge creative population here. This will be an opportunity for the artist to sell their craft,” Mulvaney said.
Artists will demonstrate their craft and many will have items for sale. Some of the artists include pottery crafters, jewelry makers, acrylic painters, woodworkers. Some of the local artists include Carol Kessler, Miriam Tait-Walters, Jeremy Williams, and Starla Stillwell.
“Kate West Studios of Mattoon will offer pet portraits for those who would like to have a painting of their dogs,” Mulvaney said.
The artists are also excited about the downtown artisan fair.
“This is a good opportunity for local people and those visiting that area to see local artists at work,” said Carol Kessler. “We hope this is something people will come out and support.”
Kessler will be set up in front of Possum’s Treasures with pastels and crotched shawls.
Both Mulvaney and Kessler note that downtown artisan fair will complement the Shelby County Art Show that is held in April.
Mulvaney said she and the other store owners hope this will be something to get people into the downtown area and into the stores.
“Downtowns are fading away and this event will give people a reason to be downtown,” Mulvaney said.
The downtown store owners are also planning an old-fashioned sidewalk sales day on July 30.
