SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
The Shelbyville School Board will make another attempt at the 1 percent sales tax for school facilities by asking the Shelbyville City Councll to help.
“The last two times, the proposal passed in Shelbyville but failed in the rest of the county,” said Superintendent Denise Bence. “We would like to meet with the City Council about changing the municipal code to adopt it as a city-wide tax.”
The council will be invited to the next school board meeting, July 12.
In action the board adopted the 2012 budget which was amended to reflect the sale of bonds and expenditures for the capital projects at Moulton and the High School buildings. The board also approved the 2012 prevailing wage.
Superintendent Denise Bence reported that 2013 budget “will look similar to this year’s”.
“All budget balances this year were better than anticipated,” she said.
She added that State Aid to the district will be reduced about 6 percent, or $275,000”.
“The pensions issue is still questionable,” she noted.
Bence also reported an increase in insurance rates due to the insurance claim for the Main Street School chimney which was struck by lightning last summer. Rates were increased over $35,000.
“Raising our deductible from $500 to $1000 would only save us $557,” Bence said. “With the loss ratio, we’re stuck.”
Athletic director Tony Pullen discussed the possibility of participating in a new athletic conference.
Shelbyville is one of seven schools looking to break away from the Okaw Conference.
“The reasons are many on breaking up the Okaw - mostly for enrollment and transportation reasons,” Pullen said. “The Okaw Conference is a great conference but we’re here to look out for what’s best for our school’s athletes.”
Invited Okaw schools include Argenta-Oreana, Central A&M, Meridian, Sullivan, Tuscola, Warrensburg-Latham, and Shelbyville. These schools are 23-51 miles in travel distance and 1 hour and under in travel time. The invited schools are demographically similar in enrollment, students and athletes.
The new conference would include basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and football. It does not include wrestling.
A decision by the school board will be made at the July meeting.
Recommendations were made regarding the district’s transportation fleet.
Transportation director Tim Powers recommended retiring four vehicles which need extensive work and/or have high mileage and puchasing a new Expedition or Suburban.
Discussion on the matter will continue at next month’s meeting.
Following executive session the board:
- Approved the employment of Heide Schechte as elementary teacher (1st grade)
- Approved the following coaching positions: Roger Jones, 8th grade boys basketball; Sam Mehl, varsity baseball; John Tynan, varsity golf; Kevin Kramer, varsity boys track; Jason Palmer, varsity girls track; Ross Forlines, junior varsity wrestling
- Accepted the resignation of Sara Melvin, school psychologist.
