Wearing Hats to Help Haiti

Moulton Middle School students recently paid to wear a hat for one day and benefit the victims of the January Haiti earthquake.

“We were challenged by Central A&M;,” said Moulton teacher Mary Bolinger. “Fifth through eighth grade students paid $1 to be able wear their hats during class. It was part of the 8th grade service project.”

The students raised $239 which was given to Shelby Memorial Hospital physical therapist Rick Reid. He and his wife Ruby will be part of a medical team going to Haiti on April 9.

“Ruby and I would like to thank everyone who has donated either money or orthopedic equipment,” Reid said. “We didn’t solicit, but still the community came through big time.” He added that the donation from the students coupled with a private donation will purchase crutches and walkers that will be shipped ahead of the team to Haiti. Donations from individuals and groups have also been given.

“It’s going to be a long struggle for Haiti. One of the ortho doctors who was there in January said Haiti now has to deal with a generation of handicapped people,” Reid said.

Reid requests that monetary donations now be sent directly to the Crudem organization at www.crudem.org or to the Red Cross. Used equipment will continue to be collected at Shelby Memorial Hospital.
