Beecher City basketball got into another high scoring contest on Monday night, this time against Odin, and this time the barn didn't just burn, it incinerated in the fourth quarter. Despite a 32-point push in the final 8:00, the Eagles had to take the loss, 90-80.
BC has been in high-scoring contests this season, including two with Brownstown. BC won the first one, 83-82. On Tuesday night, 2000+ career scorer Tyler Parrish and his team came to town for a rescheduled contest. The last time Odin was up this way, Parrish scored a career high 53 points against Cowden-Herrick in an IHSA record book 3-point shoot-out.
Odin got off the bus making baskets on Monday. BC scored 18 points out of the gate and still were five points behind after 8:00. BC kept dealing and outscored odin 19-15 in the second frame and made it a 1-point ball game at the break, 38-37.
Odin had eased off the accelerator in the second period, but out of the locker room they stomped on it. They sped out to a 26-11 run, to put the Eagles behind the 8-ball heading into the fourth down by 16, 64-48. BC didn't fold. Instead they amped it up and scored 32 points in the final 8:00. That would have been a great comeback win in many other games, but it still fell short as Odin scored another 26 points down the stretch, to hold off BC by ten.
BC and Odin scored 58 points combined in the final 8:00, that's 7.25 points every minute. They made the equivalent of 29 baskets in 8:00, that's a clip of 3.6 baskets per minute.
This time it wasn't Parrish that did the Eagles in, it was teammate Ryan Cluck. Cluck put up a season-high 32 points, along with Parrish's 24, to tip the scales in Odin's favor. BC was led by a trio of double-digit performers. Luke Levitt had 16, Finn Peterson 14, and Beau Hutchison 12.
BC had eight more players score in less than double figures. Eleven Eagles scored, while Odin had four of their six scorers in double figures. The BC role players accounted for seven 3-pointers. Cole Ohnesorge led the 5-man, 3-point bomb crew with a trey hat trick. Dirk Levitt, Brian Kirchoffer, Austin Miley and Josh Marten all dialed in from long distance.
However, even with that phalanx of shootists, BC's arc attack was dwarfed by the Odin onslaught. Odin dropped 12 triples on the Eagles. Last week, Odin dropped 13 treys on Cowden-Herrick. The Hornets' also made 13 treys and the 26 threes in that game was 3rd all-time in the IHSA by two teams.
Last week, it was Parrish who led Odin with nine 3-pointers en route to his 53 points. Against BC, it was Cluck who led the Odin onslaught with eight 3-pointers. Cluck had three last week.
Beecher City (6-14) travels to Stew-Stras on Friday night.
