SHELBYVILLE, IL, --- French poet and author, Victor Hugo who created such literary classics as Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, once wrote, “Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart.”
If you experienced feeling down during the holiday season, are in the dumps when the days are darker, or if you've found yourself in a slump after the start of the New Year, you may have a touch of the “Winter Blues”. The term is not a medical diagnosis. The state of feeling down or sad during this season is not typically linked to something specific like added stress or feeling the absence of a loved one. For those who experience more significant or severe mood changes, the problem may be a medical condition which is called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is well-defined clinical diagnosis related to the shortening of daylight hours.
On Tuesday, January 29th from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Shelby Memorial Hospital (SMH) will lead a special Girls Night Out discussion on the topic of “Winter Blues”, held at Shelbyville's Visitor's Center, located off of Route 16, just east of the main dam. All women in the community are invited to attend.
Hanna Doyle, PA-C and one of the primary care providers at the SMH Family Healthcare Center, will speak about “How to Prevent the Winter Blues”, and define the differences between the blues and a diagnosis of SAD. She will also explain the various causes, symptoms, strategies for beating the blues and treatment options for those who have been diagnosed with the disorder, including physical activity and light therapy.
According to Doyle, “Exercise increases the release of endorphins, a chemical which produces a positive feeling in the body. Regular exercise has been proven to help reduce stress, ward off anxiety and mild feelings of depression, boost self-esteem, and improve sleep”.
Another featured speaker at GNO will be Karen Stirrett, Licensed ZUMBA Instructor. She will demonstrate low-impact exercises for women of all ages and physical abilities. Stirrett will also explain the importance of exercise for mind and body.
In addition to this information, all attendees can receive a hand massage from Jason House, a Certified Massage Therapist. Always a feature at each GNO, there will be healthy snacks for those who attend and a drawing for a free gift. Attendees will receive a free sample from Merle Norman Cosmetics.
