The Illinois Department of Transportation (District 7) has announced that repairs to the Union Pacific railroad crossings in Moultrie, Shelby, Effingham, and Fayette counties will take place over the next few weeks.
The railroad will be performing maintenance operations, and IDOT will assist with the traffic control. The state route crossing affected will be IL 16 in Shelbyville, IL 33 near Beecher City, US 40 in St. Elmo and IL 185 in St. Peter. In addition many local roads will be affected.
Railroad personnel will be repairing damaged and deteriorated sections of the railway. Construction at rail/highway crossings takes place in two phases, each phase will require a one day closure of the road. Due to the uncertainty of construction schedules an exact date for the closures is not known. Truck traffic will be detoured, and local traffic is urged to find alternate routes.
Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the traveling public, property owners and commercial establishments. Please be cautious, and reduce your speed while traveling through this work zone.
