Flag Retirement Ceremony

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — The Shelbyville VFW Post 4829 and the Roy Vanderpool American Legion held a flag retirement ceremony Thursday evening at the park next to the VFW.

Between 250 and 300 tattered and torn flags of all sizes were ceremonially burned and the ashes will be buried in a special area. The procedure was done in accordance with the Depart of Defense's guidelines for flag disposal.

"This was our third year for the ceremony," said Charles Hubbartt, VFW trustee. "We did it for two years, but missed last year. We want to make this an annual event."

"There were a lot of flags brought to us this year. Flags may be brought anytime to the VFW or the American Legion for the next ceremony," Hubbartt said.

A small audience was on hand to witness the ceremony.
