SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Plans are underway for the 2013 Relay for Life in Shelby County.
The annual event set for August 2-3 in Forest Park is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Teams fundraise throughout the year and join together for the overnight event that celebrates cancer survivors, cooperates in the fight against cancer, and remembers those who have fallen to the disease.
Friends, organizations, schools, and businesses are encouraged to form teams in remembrance of a cancer victim or to honor a survivor while having fun raising money for the American Cancer Society.
The theme for the event is “Everyday Heroes” and teans are encouraged to incorporate the theme into their fundraising and for the Relay event.
“I personally am excited about being more active on the committee this year,” said Team Recruitment chairman Phil Miller. ”Relay is a fun way to raise funds for the fight against cancer and I definitely would like to see more teams participate this year.
“I have enjoyed being part of the hospital team and we have done a lot of interesting and fun events to help raise money,” Miller continued. “ It has really piqued my interest in working for this cause. Personally I have been impacted by cancer with the loss of several friends over the years. Anything that I can do to help raise awareness for ways we can reduce risk for cancer or to raise money to help fund research for a cure and assistance for those suffering from the disease is time well spent.
“My personal goal is to see all of our teams from last year to join us again, and to encourage ten former or brand new teams to be part of the Relay this year.”
Goals for this year include having 24 teams participating and $55,000 in fundraising through teams efforts and sponsorships.

The Shelby County committee is looking for volunteers to help in the planning of the event.
“You don’t have to chair a subcommittee. You may just offer to help,” said American Red Cross Regional representative Staci Calvert. “We need more volunteers to help.”
The next committee meeting will be held February 11 at 5:30 p.m. in the Shelby Memorial Hospital 2nd floor classroom. Those interested in volunteering may attend.
Kickoff for team captains will be held March 11 at 5:30 p.m. Location to be announced.
