Administrative Professionals Week To Be Observed April 22-28
Administrative Professionals Week will be observed April 22-28 in 2007. The Administrative Professionals Day is celebrated on Wednesday, April 25. This year’s theme is “Shaping the Future”.
This annual event was originally organized in 1952 as “National Secretaries Week” by the National Secretaries Association (now known as the International Association of Administrative Professionals, IAAP) in conjunction with public relations executive Harry Klemfuss and a consortium of office product manufacturers. It was established as an effort to recognize secretaries for their contributions in the workplace, and to attract people to secretarial/adminstrative careers.
Today, there are more than 4.1 million secretaries and administrative assistants in the United States, according to the U. S. Department of Labor statistics.
The name change occurred in 2000 to keep pace with changing job titles and the expanding responsibilities of today’s administrative workforce.
The week is always observed annually during the last full week in April, standard Sunday through Saturday calendar. Wednesday of that week is always observed as the day.
Over the years, Administrative Professionals Week has become one of the largest workplace observances.
Teri Whalen is the owner/operator of Whalen’s West Side Floral and she said Administrative Professional Day is a very busy day for her business.
“That is actually the third busiest holiday for us,” said Whalen. “People in this area really take good care of their Administrative Assistants.”
Dena Bolin is a good example of an administrative professional. Bolin runs the office for the Greater Shelbyville Chamber of Commerce and has done so for about a year. She generally handles all of the business for the chamber, because the chamber board members all work at other jobs.
“The chamber has 13 board members and I basically answer to all of them,” said Bolin. “It is my job to remain organized and do what I need to do to keep the office going and accommodate all their wishes.”
Bolin like many Administrative Assistants often acts more like the boss than the boss.
“I try very hard to keep them (chamber board members) aware of what is happening because they (chamber members) all have other jobs so it is up to me to filter the needed information to them.”
Former chamber president Mark Shanks has much appreciation for the job Bolin does.
“Dena has a great deal of responsibilities and has to be a self-starter for that job,” said Shanks. “Her position is very important because many times she is the person deciding the priorities for the chamber.”
Shanks went on to say he feels Bolin does a great job.
“She does a fantastic job and is a great asset for the chamber. She is also a wonderful face for the community and represents the chamber well.”
