Results of the Shelby County Art Show

The 43rd Shelby County Art Show with 555 junior entries and196 adult entries all of which were created within a year’s span of time, 10 demonstrators in various media and displays, and the special exhibit of Katie West was held this past Saturday and Sunday at the 4-H Center in the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

Katie was present both days at her exhibit which consisted of paintings, her earliest wood carvings, and many wood pieces from more recent days. Photographs of murals created were also displayed. 510 people signed in as they entered the free art show. All attendees had the chance to vote for their favorite junior and adult art piece. With the purchase of a program book, they also had the opportunity to win one of the ten raffle prizes consisting of two pastel paintings (one by Marge Beck and one by Carol Kessler), a pastel painting by Ilabelle Sarver, a beaded flower arrangement by Gina Shellenbarger, a rock carving by Joe Shellenbarger, a set of framed flower photos by Tom and Valerie Gaddis, a beaded hanging and horse bottle holder by Martha Butler, a baby changing quilted item with supplies by Cheryl Modzelewski, and an oval stained glass hanging by Kathie Storm. Additional raffle tickets could be obtained with a donation.

Judges for the show were Mike Bryant from Decatur for the adult entries and Debbie Borries of Effingham for the junior entries. Adult awards given by the judge came with monetary awards. A learning critique was given by each starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday for those who had artwork in the show.

The ribbon winners are as follows:

Adult Overall Best of Show- Rachel Corwin of Bethany with a graphite drawing titled “On the Home Front”

Two-dimensional Best of Shows- Shirley Buescher of Pana with a watercolor painting titled “Glads” and Tom Brachbill of Shelbyville with a photography titled “Iceberries”

Three-dimensional Best of Show- Joe Shellenbarger of Herrick with a stone and wood carving titled “Bear and Rattlesnake Pipe”

Two Junior Best of Show awards were- Jordana Busboom from Central A & M for photography and Emily Miller from Central A & M for a clay creation.

People’s Choice was voted by the public to be that of Pilar Stenger, Decatur, with an oil pastel titled “What Ever” in the adult division and the clay sculpture of Reece Waddington from Central A&M; Bond Elementary in the junior division.

Most of these Best of Show and People’s Choice pieces will be on view at DJ’s Framing on Main Street, Shelbyville through this week following the show.

Winners of the Door Prizes were Jamie Martincic, Ron Manley, Emily Rothrock, Lewis Kerr, Quinn Stewart, Danielle Simpson, Corey Tavenner, Dian Tavenner, Tim Bell, and Shirley Spradlin.

Adult ribbons were awarded in the Original division to Tonya Askins of Shelbyville (red, white), Kathy Barnet of Shelbyville (red, 2 white), Marge Beck of Shelbyville (white), Tom Brachbill of Shelbyville (Best, 2 white), Sandy Brix of Shelbyville (2 blue, 2 white), Lee Ann Calvert of Tower Hill (white), Lindsay Camfield of Shelbyville (white), Aaron L. Cole of Shelbyville (blue, 3 red, white), Patti Corwin of Bethany (blue, red, white), Rachel Corwin on Bethany (Overall Best, 2 blue, red), Tom Gaddis of Shelbyville (white), Roy Gaunt of Shelbyville (red), Nancy Guilliams of Effingham (blue, 2 red, white), Kathryn Loft of Shelbyville (blue), Jan Clair Mason of Vandalia (2 blue, 2 red, 4 white), Shelly Merriman of Decatur (white), Pilar Stenger of Decatur (4 blue, 3 red), Carole Gross Stretch of Shelbyville (2 white), Steve Tavenner of Findlay (blue, red), and John J. Tynan of Shelbyville (blue, red).

Adult Kopy Kat Korner winners were Sandy Brix of Shelbyville (white), Patti Corwin of Bethany (blue, white), Shelly Merriman of Decatur (red), John Parks of Stewardson (white), Randy Reynolds of Edinburg (blue, white), and Richard Ross of Shelbyville (red).

Adult Professional awards were given to Shirley Buescher of Pana (Best, 2 white), Barbara Dove of Decatur (blue, red), Harold Hampton of Effingham (blue, red), Carol Kessler of Shelbyville (2 blue, 2 red), Dan Modzelewski of Shelbyville (2 red, white), Ruth Rosenwinkle of Mattoon (red, 2 white), Ilabelle Sarver of Herrick (2 red, 2 white), and Joseph Shellenbarger of Herrick (Best, red, 2 white).

In the Junior Exhibitors all Kindergarten through 2nd Grade received a green participation ribbon. Third through twelfth grade art was judged. Not all works are given a ribbon. The following names represent only those with ribbons.
