Sullivan Woman Dies after Accident at Dam East Intersection

Alberta M. Ray, 80, of Sullivan has died as a result of a two-car accident on Route 16 just east of Shelbyville. The accident occurred by Joseph’s Landing at the dam east entrance Saturday.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s office was notified of this accident at 11:43 a.m. Ray was driving a 1997 Ford Taurus and failed to yield at the stop sign on Clarksburg Road. She pulled out into traffic to make a left-hand turn to go into Shelbyville.

Tyler Woolard, 19, of Windsor was driving a 1992 GMC Sonoma east on Route 16 in the right-hand lane. He said Ray pulled out of the intersection and then stopped looking the other way. He stated he could not stop and hit her in her driver’s door. Ray and her passengers, Heath Ray, 37 and Grace Ray, 10, both also of Sullivan -- were taken to Shelby Memorial Hospital. Alberta Ray was later transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Ray was pronounced dead at 9:58 p.m. on Monday, according to officials at the Champaign County coroner’s office.

See Tuesday’s edition of the Shelbyville Daily Union and on shelbyvilledailyunion.com for a report of the accident.
