Shelby County 4-H Week activities planned

Shelby County 4-H Week is March 16 – March 22. 4-H leaders and families are going to be busy with all the activities that are being planned. Be on the lookout for window displays in Shelbyville, Windsor, Strasburg, Sigel, Moweaqua and Assumption.

March 13 – Federation members are taking cinnamon rolls to the County Board meeting at the Courthouse.

March 16 – Amazing Race

The Amazing Race consists of a 4 member 4-H team and a driver. Clues are given to members and they guess the location and then drive to their destination. Once they arrive at their destination, teams are given a Minute to Win It type of Challenge. Once they complete the challenge, they are awarded “4-H money” and are given clues to their next location. There are a total of 8 challenges that teams will compete in. After the race, teams will meet back at the 4-H Center and will have pizza donated by the Shelby County Federation. The “4-H money” will be tallied and the top 3 teams will receive prizes. Amy Rochkes is the designer of the Amazing Race course and 4-H thanks her for all her hard work.

March 17 – Members will attend a church of their choice.

March 17 – There will be a skating party at Silver Stars Skating Rink in Mattoon from 5:00-7:30 pm.

March 18 – Window Displays must be set-up by 9:00 a.m for judging. Clubs throughout the county decorate a business’s window based on the 4-H week theme. This year the theme is “4-H . . . More Than You Imagined”. Results are given out at International Night.

March 19 – International Night is held at the 4-H center at 6:00 p.m. Clubs pick out countries and then prepare food and decorate for that country. A food donation is also held. Clubs are asked to bring non-perishable food items which will in turn be donated to the Shelby County food pantry.

March 20 – Wear your 4-H t-shirt to promote Shelby County 4-H. Clubs are also asked to promote 4-H in their local area. Federation members will be bagging groceries in Shelbyville, Windsor and Moweaqua and talking to patrons about 4-H and passing out 4-H information.

March 21 – Public Speaking contest at Shelby County Farm Bureau at 7:00. 4-H members compete in a public speaking contest. Speeches may either be Formal, Illustrated, Original works, or Oral Interpretation. Members will receive A, B,or C ratings and a state fair winner and alternate will also be chosen.

March 22 – Family Fun Night at the 4-H center from 7:00-8:30. 4-H families and their friends are invited to come and play Carnival games, Bingo, and Minute to Win It Games. Prizes will be awarded and snacks furnished.

It’s not too late to join 4-H! The deadline to join 4-H is April 4th. If interested in joining 4-H, contact Yolanda at the Shelby County Extension Office at 774-9546. 4-H is open to youth ages 8-18 as of September 1, 2012.
