Ram Freshmen Blow Lead At Home Against Maroa

Shelbyville freshmen had an 11-point lead with 5:00 to play on Thursday night at home, but gradually let Maroa go on a 19-5 run to claim a 41-38 victory.

The Rams and the Trojans sparred for over 3:00 to start the game, before anybody got in a punch. Ethan Turner drew first blood, driving into the lane and hitting a leaning bank shot at the 3:45 mark of the first. Maroa quickly answered with a 3-pointer. Two minutes later, Maroa hit a baseline runner and went up 5-2 with 1:15 to play in the first.

Maroa substituted a point shorter guard and Zack England's long reach allowed him to steal the ball and take it on a break. He missed, but Turner followed with the basket, 5-4 Maroa. On the next Maroa possession, Darin Breeden stepped into the passing lane and picked off another pass. Breeden took it coast to coast for a Ram lead, 6-5.

But in the last 30 seconds, another base line runner put Maroa up 6-5 heading into the second period.

Shelbyville out-scored Maroa 25 to 16 through the middle quarters and built an 8-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Shelby's Tucker Schwengel drove to the lane, stopped and popped for two to put the Rams up by double-digits, 33-22 with 5:00 to play. That was Shelby's last hurrah before Maroa went on a game-winning run.

The Maroa point guard beat his man and drove right down Main Street for two. A minute later, Maroa went to the line and made both ends of a 1-and-1, 33-29 Rams. The Maroa press knocked the ball out of bounds and the inbound pass was thrown towards the Maroa basket, It was picked off and Maroa scored, 33-31.

Shelby turned it over again and Maroa scored on another base line drive to tie the game at 33-33. It was an 11- 0 run in less than 3:30.

Adding insult to injury, Connor Biehler went up for a shot and was slapped on the arm loud enough for the people in the stands to hear it. The refs didn't hear it or see it. Maroa got the ball to their end and, although Biehler didn't get the call at his end, Biehler was called for a questionable foul at Maroa's end. It was his fifth and he was done. Maroa made both ends of the 1-and-1 for the 35-33 lead.

Ethan Turner flashed to the rim on a offensive rebound, got the ball and was fouled. He went to the line for a 1-and-bonus and made both, tying the game again 35-35 with 1:12 remaining. Maroa was fouled again and made both shots, 37-35.

Travis Lee scored and inside two on a drive and dish to tie the game again 37-37 with a minute left. Pressing defenses back and forth allowed one Maroa score and Shelby got a shot at one. Lee got a step and dribbled in from the wing to shoot a short jumper and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 shots and the Rams trailed by just one, 39-38, with 15 seconds left.

The Rams fouled and sent Maroa to the line. They made both shots again. Maroa shot 8-of-8 from the line in the last 5:00 of the game to win by three points. They were up by three, 41-38, and the Rams tried to get a 3-pointer off as time was winding down. Maroa was defending the arc and finally, Zack England had to take a hurried shot to beat the buzazer. It hit off the rim and the game was over.

Maroa 41, Shelbyville 38.
