The Shelbyville City Council discussed one item of business and heard the annual City Police report Monday evening.
The request for a temporary closure of one lane of East North Ninth Street for a Bike-a-Thon in September was tabled awaiting more details about the event.
Commissioner Brent Fogleman voiced his concern about closing even part of the roadway because of boat traffic that would be happening at the time.
Shelbyville Police Chief David Tallman said that two officers would be needed to control traffic. But regarding the one lane closure itself, he said, “If it were for only a couple of hours, we could probably do it.”
Tallman presented the yearly police report noting that the total number of complaints and cases were both down over the 2011 figures.
Highlights from the 2012 report include:
Arson - none reported in 2012
Residential/Commercial burglaries - 14, up 7 from 2011
Motor vehicle burglaries - 9, down 37 from 2011
Vehicle thefts - 2, 2 also reported in 2011
Criminal damage - 21, down 8 from 2011
Forgery - 6, up 5 from 2011
Battery - 33, down 6 from 2011
Weapons offenses - 0, down 2 from 2011
Traffic accidents - 97, down 11 from 2011
Hit/Run traffic accidents - 8, 8 also reported in 2011
Warrant arrests - 51, down 20 from 2011
Domestic violence calls/ non-arrest - 19, down 9 from 2011
Total DUIs - 13, down 7 from 2011
Total Complaints - 2,094, down 150 from 2011
Total Cases - 535, down 102 from 2011
Tallman noted that the solve rate for 2012 was 85 percent.
“I’m used to it (solve rate) being in the mid-90s,” Tallman said. “But we’ve had a few unsolved burglaries by out of area people. Some of them may be in jails on charges elsewhere.”
He added that the Saving Orphaned Animals Program, run by Shelbyville Police dispatcher Penny Standerfer, has saved 220 animals in 2012, bringing its six-year total to 1636.
“That program has saved the county $29,805 over the past six years $29,805 in euthanasia fees alone,” Tallman said.
