2-Car Accident Leaves 1 Dead, 3 Hospitalized
A two-vehicle accident Monday evening near Shelbyville left a Findlay woman dead and three others injured.
Amy L. Lutz, 33, died as a result of the accident. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Alan R. Lutz, 34, of Sullivan. Lutz and two others in a second vehicle, Heather M. Logue, 21, of Shelbyville, and an infant, were transported to Shelby Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana. They are currently listed in fair to good condition, according to Carle Hospital spokesperson.
According to the Illinois State Police, Logue was northbound in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee on 2100E east of Shelbyville when she pulled into the intersection at Route 16 and was struck in the driver’s side by the Lutz vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Intrepid, which was traveling eastbound on Route 16. The Logue vehicle, in turn, struck the Lutz vehicle in the driver’s door and was pushed into the northeast ditch. The Lutz vehicle came to rest in the westbound lane of the highway facing northwest.
Heather Logue and the infant were seatbelted and had to be extricated by Shelbyville Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Neither of the occupants in the Lutz vehicle were wearing seatbelts and both had to be extricated. Amy Lutz was pronounced dead at Shelby Memorial Hospital at 6:45 p.m. by Shelby County Coroner Brian Green.
Traffic on Route 16 was stopped for more than two hours while emergency personnel worked to free the victims and clear the scene. Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Shelbyville Police, Shelbyville Ambulance, Windsor Fire and Rescue and Windsor Ambulance assisted in the accident.
An autopsy will be conducted and an inquest is pending according to Green
The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
