Argh! CHBC Sinks Lady Pirates
CHBC went into Pirate Cove and knocked off 17-3 Cumberland on Monday night, 59-48.
Sophomore point guard Bailey Doty lit up the Pirates for 22 points, while freshman center Micah Jones and sophomore blood 'n guts guard Courtney Meyers put up ten points each. Sophomore Faith Wendte shot near double figures, scoring eight points.
Cumberland has been state-ranked this year and was 17-2 until Saturday night, when they lost to Flora in overtime. They were looking to make-up for that loss by defending their home court against CHBC on Monday. Meanwhile, CHBC (15-4) was coming off a tourney sweep, taking the title at the Sandoval.
CHBC and their sophomore point guard, Doty, wanted to build on that success by making Cumberland walk the plank.
Doty had a few games early in the year where she lit up opponents, but CHBC has a host of talent and on any given night any number of players can step to the fore as the leader. In this big game at Cumberland, Doty took the initiative. She dialed in twice from long distance and got to the line twice, making 2-of-3 free throws.
Three other freshman-sophomores took their shots at the Pirates, for ten, ten, and eight points. Senior leader Hillary Shelton added six more points.
Game-high scorer Macy Shupe had 26 points, including four treys and 10-of-18 from the line. But only one more Pirate was in double figures, Weaver, with 12 points.Gabel was held to just six points, with one trey.
The two teams tried to out-score each other early, but CHBC led by just two after one, 17-15. The home team won a more defensive second and claimed a 2-point lead at the break, 28-26. CHBC swarmed their way to a 16-8 run out of the locker room and that took the Pirates out of their rhythm.
Leading 42-36 to start the fourth, CHBC kept the pedal to the metal and Cumberland couldn't catch them. CHBC pulled away for the 11-point win with a 17-point final flurry.
CHBC (15-4) returns home victorious on Thursday to host Sandoval then host Neoga next Tuesday.
