Relay for Life Plans Underway

Looking for Super Heroes

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Plans for the 2013 American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Shelby County are underway and teams are encourage to get a jump start on their organization and fundraising

The theme for the event is “Everyday Super Heroes” focusing on caregivers and support people for cancer patients.

“They are the unsung heroes and are many times forgotten,” said American Cancer Society representative Lisa Brandt.

“Super Heroes of all ages can help with this year’s relay by donating any Halloween Super Hero costume,” said committee member Barb Waymire.  “We will use the costumes for the survivor dinner and to decorate the park for the event.  The more costumes donated, the more fun we can have with this theme.  All sizes accepted; infant to adult costumes are in need.”

Costumes may be dropped off at the Shelbyville Library, Daily Union, Shelbyville High School (see Mrs. Bogart), Moulton Middle School Office, Main Street School, or to any committee member.

The committee has set at $50,000 fundraising goal for 2013. The Relay event will be held August 2-3 in Forest Park. The committee is looking for at least 20 teams to help meet and surpass that goal.

Team Recruitment chairman Phil Miller encourages more teams to join in the local event.

“Almost everyone’s life has been touched by cancer in some way,” Miller said.

This year 14 teams and sponsorships raised $40,583 for the American Cancer Society.
