SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
After electing board member Larry Lenz to the position of Vice-Chairman (See “Lenz Elected” in February 10th edition) the board approved several different reports and documents.
First C.E.F.S. asked the board to approve routine documents for their transportation program. Those were approved.
Then the board heard an impassioned pled from James O’Connell, a postal union representative talking about the potential closing of the Postal Service Processing Center in Springfield.
“This is part of a plan to close over 250 processing facilities around the nation along with almost 3,000 small offices across the country” O’Connell told the board. “I strongly urge you to pass a resolution to keep this processing center here.”
The next item of business was a report on the county farm lease from committee chairman Robert Jordan.
“Our expenses are going up so we decided to raise the county farm lease $10 per acre, which doesn’t sound like much but when you talking about a 196.3 acres, you are talking $1,963,” Jordan told the board. This increase was approved.
Next it was the County Engineer Alan Spesard’s turn to report on the Highway Department.
Spesard asked the board to approve routine resolutions for cold mix, and rock materials used in road repair.
Spesard then asked approval of an engineering agreement on a bridge replacement. This was approved.
Spesard also asked the board to approve a bridge repair in Cold Springs Township at an estimated cost of $10,000. This was approved.
Finally Spesard gave the board some updates on improvements on railroad crossings his department is working on.
Then it was Emergency Management Agency (EMA)/Zoning Administration director Jared Rowcliffe’s turn to report.
On the zoning side of his report, Rowcliffe told the board he had issued 9 building permits. The breakdown of those permits was: 1 mobile home, 1 residential addition, 3 accessory buildings, 1 modular home and 3 new residences.
On the EMA side of his report Rowcliffe told the board February is Earthquake Preparedness month.
“Yesterday was the ‘Great Central U. S. Shake Down’ program where the federal government urged folks practice earthquake safety, “Rowcliffe told the board.
Then it was the board’s turn to give committee reports. In those committee reports the Animal Control Committee recommended raising the pick-up fees charged to cities and villages in the county to $17 from $12.50.
The next item of business was chairman updates and Chairman Bruce Cannon talked to the board about the enhanced 911 for the county. He appointed a committee to study this matter. The people appointed to that committee were: county officers and the following board members, Richard Hayden, Kay Kearney, Dave Cruitt, Gary Gergeni, Rob Amling and Dale Wetherell.
Cannon also introduced the new assistant State’s Attorney Amanda Ade-Harlow.
