Carl Russell Brown, 85, of Findlay, IL passed away at 6:15 AM Sunday December 9, 2012 in St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur, IL.
Carl was born July 17, 1927 at Mt. Vernon, IL the son of George Ira and Lida Sara Swarms Brown.
He married Shirley Evelyn Massey on Feb. 4, 1952 and they were married for over 60 years.
Carl was a graduate of Findlay High School in the Class of 1944. He served two years of active military service in the United States Navy as an aviation machinist mate. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army reserves for three years and then the United States Naval Reserves for eight years. He was recipient of the WWII Victory Medal. Carl was a member of the Clarence Bixler American Legion Post # 409 of Findlay.
Carl was a train enthusiast. He held a railroad engineer's license and was a life time member of the Monticello Railroad Museum of Monticello, IL. For many years, he maintained his airplane pilot's license and flew his own airplane.
Carl was employed as a telegraph operator for fourteen years for the C&EI Railroad, and then served as Postmaster of Findlay, IL for 24 years.
He was in the first class of EMT`s; was an auxiliary police officer and served as a volunteer fireman all in Findlay.
Surviving are his wife Shirley; children: Lewis (Beth) Brown of Hazel Green, AL, Carla Sue Roso of Springdale, AR, Tina (Ben) Trapani of Decatur, IL, Lynne (Chuck) Farris of Belle, MO and Russell Dean (Julie) Brown of Bethlehem, PA; fourteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother George (Beverly) Brown of Decatur, IL and sister Vona Cook of Decatur, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Joshua Aaron Arthur and brother-in-law Lester Cook.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday December 13, 2012 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Findlay. Rev. Richard Hargrave will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Wednesday. Burial will be in Findlay Cemetery, Findlay, IL. Military rites will be performed by the Clarence Bixler American Legion Post # 409 of Findlay, IL. Memorials may be made in Carl's memory to the Monticello Railroad Museum of Monticello, IL
