Harold Dean “Birdman” Gill, 72, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 11:17 AM Monday Dec. 31, 2012 in Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL.

Harold was born Jan. 1, 1940 in Shelby County, IL the son of Jesse and Helen Barnhart Gill.

Harold was employed by Norfolk and Western Railroad in Decatur, IL for 31 years.  After retirement, he and daughter Carol operated a lawn care business.

He was a member and past-president of the Shelby Horseshoe Club.  Harold was instrumental in the planning, fund raising and construction of the current horseshoe courts.  He was locally famous for the club's main fund-raising effort, which was cooking and selling the Horseshoe Club's Famous Sausage Sandwiches at area events.  He loved to work on woodcraft projects in his shop and collect miniature cars.

Surviving are his wife Jewell; daughters: Carol Sue (Frank) Ray of Shelbyville and Cindy Lynn (Larry) Heady of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren: Ross Heady, Harlie Gill, Charles Dean Gill Jr. and Hunter Dean Gill; sister Mary Bieber of Lakewood, IL; brother Roy (Laverne) Gill of Shelbyville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Charles Dean Gill Sr.; brothers Robert Gill and Jesse Gill.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday Jan. 4, 2013 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.  Gary Crowder will officiate.  Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home.  Burial will be in Sand Creek Cemetery near Windsor, IL.  Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.  On line condolences:  lockartgreenfuneral home.com
