Eugene W. Mueller, 82, of Shelbyville, died at 5:00 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2008 in Shelby Memorial Hospital, Shelbyville.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. E. Wade Helmkamp officiating. Visitation from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday and one hour before services on Saturday. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Strasburg, Illinois. Following the committal service a luncheon will be held in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Mr. Mueller was born on March 2, 1926 in Peoria, Illinois and was adopted by William and Elsie Foelsing Mueller, Jr of Strasburg in May of 1926. He became a baptized member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg in 1926. He graduated from Strasburg High School in 1944. He became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville in 1944. He married Joeann Williams on May 14, 1950 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Shelbyville. During the years as a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, he served as an active board member for many years. He was active in sporting activities around the community, serving on softball activities in the 1940’s and 1950’s and then directed the building of the Little League diamond in the Hulick Addition in the early 1960’s, serving 14 years as a Little League commissioner and a team manager. He was a member of the Shelbyville Lions Club for many years, serving on the board of directors, club secretary 15 years. He also served Lions District 1-L as membership chairman, Camp Lions Coordinator, Zone 32 Chairman and was awarded the Lions International Association Melvin Jones Award in 1995 for outstanding work in Lionism. He was employed at Oliver Corporation for 26 years, and retired from Grain Systems International of Assumption in 1991. He also worked on a part-time basis for Adams Memorials Monument Company in Charleston, Illinois for 20 years.
Surviving are his son, Larry G. Mueller and wife Cheryl of Decatur; daughter, Jacqueline A. Mock and special friend Noel Bayley of Lerna; sister, Geraldine Renner of Marshalltown, Iowa; half-brother, Jerry Leary of Naples, FL; half-sister, Manda Allen of Peoria; and sister-in-law, Joann Leary of Farmington, IL; grandchildren, Amy Finley and husband Brian of Charleston, Angela Stephens and husband Roger of Shelbyville and Adam Mock (US Army) of Lerna; step-granddaughter, Mandy Rudisill of Decatur; great grandchildren, Zachary and Macayla Finley of Charleston, Rory and Tori Stephens of Shelbyville; step-great grandchildren, Colton, Kyler and Courtlan Stephens of Shelbyville and Natalie Finley of Charleston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joeann on July 5, 2007; parents; and step-brother, Jack Leary.
