Whitney Dove “Whit” Hardy, 76, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013 in Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, MO.

 A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 in First United Methodist Church, Shelbyville; Rev. Dan Seibert and Dr. David Middleton officiating.  Graveside services will be held at a later date in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville.  Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials may be given to the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, Habitat for Humanity International or First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, IL.

 Whit was born April 29, 1936 in Ironton, OH, the son of Fred E. Hardy, Jr. and Alta Jane Dove Hardy.  He married Nancy Clark on August 21, 1966 in Shelbyville, IL.

 Whit was a member of the Shelbyville High School Class of 1954; a 1958 graduate of Miami University, Oxford, OH; and University of Illinois College of Law, 1961.  He began his legal career with the firm of Craig & Craig in Mattoon, IL; then worked for Legal Aid Offices in Peoria, Danville and Springfield.  In 1982, he returned to Shelbyville to open his private practice. He enjoyed the practice of law for over 50 years. 

 Whit was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, active in the choir and Questers Sunday School Class.   He was a member of the Shelby County Bar Association, attorney for Habitat for Humanity in Shelby County and Christian Marriage Ministry of Central Illinois.    Whit was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troup # 51 in Shelbyville and later served in various leadership roles with the Boy Scouts.   He founded and chaired Shelby County Lincoln Heritage, Inc. which brought the Lincoln-Thornton Statuary to Shelbyville, and “Looking for Lincoln” Wayside Exhibits throughout Shelby County. 

 He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Channing  Hardy and wife Paula of Vincennes, IN; daughter, Karyn Hardy Seiffert and husband Todd of Arvada, CO; brother, Theodore C. Hardy and wife  Ann of Pittsburgh, PA; sister, Pamela Beck and husband Gerald of Shaker Heights, OH; and three wonderful grandsons, Alexander and Zachariah Hardy and Evan Seiffert.

 He was preceded in death by his parents.
