Dwight E. Pogue, 89, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 11:48 PM Tuesday Feb. 26, 2013 in Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday March 2, 2013 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Rev. John Curtis will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Dwight was born April 1, 1923 in Pickaway Township in Shelby County near Findlay, IL, the son of Roy A. and Olive Rita (Rose) Pogue. He married Mary E. “Betty” Klauser on Nov. 17, 1946 in Shelbyville, IL.

Dwight was a graduate of Findlay High School in the Class of 1941. That year he was a member of the basketball team that reached the Illinois Basketball Championship State Finals.

Dwight was a lifelong Shelby County farmer. A portion of the land he farmed has been in his family for over 145 years. In addition to farming, for over 25 years, he served as manager of the Shelby County ASCS office.

Dwight valiantly served his country in the United States Army during WWII from December of 1943 to April of 1946. He fought in the European Theatre, and was one of the brave servicemen who were part of the invasion force that landed on Utah Beach in the Normandy Invasion of France on D-day. He fought for days before meeting up with his 716th Railroad Operating Battalion near Nice, France. Dwight was a train engineer shipping ammunitions, weapons and wounded soldiers to safety from battlefields on the front.

He was a staunch Republican and was not shy about discussing politics or other matters of importance with his coffee club friends at Guys Restaurant, Hardees or McDonalds. He was a member of V.F.W Post # 4829, Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #71 and the Shelbyville Moose Lodge all of Shelbyville.

Surviving are his wife Mary E. (Betty) Klauser Pogue; children: Patricia A. Macklin and husband Michael (Mike) of Shelbyville and John Pogue and wife Jacki of Shelbyville; sisters: Marjorie Christman of Shelbyville and Rosemary Oldenburg of Minonk, IL; grandson Robbie Macklin and wife Stacey of Effingham, IL; great granddaughters: Jesse Macklin and Ella Macklin of Effingham; step-grandsons: Richard Mares of Decatur, IL and Terren Mares of Houston, TX; step-granddaughters: Desila Merry and husband Mark of O’Fallon, MO and Roxanne Mares of Austin, TX; step-great grandsons: Kyle Merry and Derek Merry of O’Fallon, MO; Step-great granddaughters: Christine Hughes of Austin, TX, Alaina Mares and Jessica Mares of Decatur, IL and Paige Kimme of Effingham, IL; step-great great daughters Denise Kimme of Effingham and Khloe Mares of Decatur, IL

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Olive Pogue, brother Aubrey and sister Marilyn.
