Donald Wayne Matlock, 77, of Shelbyville, died at 12:27 p.m. Sunday, October 21, 2012 in Shelbyville Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Shelbyville, IL.
Honoring Don's wishes, graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 in the Blyman Addition of Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL with his niece, Chaplain Karla Thornton officiating. Everyone is welcome to attend. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Senior Center.
Don was born on November 11, 1934 in Moweaqua, IL, the son of Clarence and Evelyn Reed Matlock. He graduated from Findlay High School in the Class of 1952, where he was a member of the track & field team. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was awarded the sharpshooters medal. Don worked at the Oliver Corporation until they closed. He then worked for P&H Manufacturing and at the same time he farmed for 20 years three miles north of Shelbyville. After he retired, he did woodworking at which he was a craftsman. Don loved flowers and gardening. He was a fan of all sports - his favorite was the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed working crossword puzzles. Don was assistant manager for the “Mets” Little League Baseball Team in Shelbyville of which his son, Lonnie, played on. Don's favorite place to eat was the Shelbyville Dairy Queen. He was a member of the Little Flock Baptist Church, near Assumption. His parents taught all eight children to play a musical instrument. They had their own family band and played at surrounding churches. He married Doris Keown on September 9, 1954. They were married for 58 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Lonnie Wayne Matlock of Shelbyville; brother, Lyle “Mick” Matlock and wife Marybelle of Shelbyville; sisters, Lois Sanner and husband Don and Judy Burch and husband John all of Decatur; brothers-in-law, Don Keown and wife Bonnie of Findlay, Larry Keown and wife Ruth Ann of Lakewood and Bob Allen and wife Jenell of Mode; and sisters-in-law, Linda Getz and husband Jack of Findlay and Mayme Matlock of Shelbyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glenn and Verne; and sisters, Mary Allen and Jean Wooters.
