Junior “J.R.” H.L. Lilly, 84, of Tower Hill, IL, formerly of Beecher City, IL, passed away at 5:40 AM Monday Nov. 26, 2012 in St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL.
Junior was born January 23, 1928 in Louden Twp, Fayette County, IL the son of Lemuel and Wreatha Bartimus Lilly.
He was a lifetime member of the Okaw Valley Muzzle Loader Association, the United Methodist Church of Tower Hill, American Legion Post # 81 of Shelbyville and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association.
He attended Beecher City High School until being drafted into the United States Army in 1946. He served his country as a paratrooper and medical technician in Japan during the occupation following WWII. In 1949 he began studies at Eastern Illinois State Teachers College in Charleston, IL. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Bradley University in 1951. He began a career farming his land near Tower Hill before returning to Eastern in 1955, where he obtained his teacher certification.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved farming, his family, teaching and his country.
He married Alice Bender on January 25, 1953 and she survives. Also surviving are his children: Alicia Womack of Mattoon, Il, Christine Whitlatch of Decatur, IL, Greg (Elaine Lilly of Mode, IL and Kevin Lilly of Tower Hill; grandchildren: Vicki (Marc) Westergard of St. Petersburg Beach, FL, Cindy (Neil) Brown of Fillmore, IL, Alison Womack of Kewanee, IL, Chandler Womack of Urbana, IL, Troy (Heather) Whitlatch of Forsyth, IL, Jamie(Mark) Muscato of Decatur, IL Becky(Steve) Kull of Effingham, IL, Tommy(Thad) Jurgens of Golconda, IL, Dusti(Jason;)Reese of Davenport, IA, Trent Lilly of Cowden, IL, Jennifer(Don) Georges of Davenport, IA and Blake Lilly of Mode; eighteen great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Berniece Wright of Effingham, Mary Lewis of Beecher City and Betty Kruzan of Washington, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sons-in-law, Charles Womack and James Whitlatch, sister Lois Himes and brother Duane Lilly.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday Nov. 30, 2012 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville. Pastor Dennis Warner will officiate. Military rites will be performed by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Thursday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Louden Township, Fayette County. Memorials may be made to a fund for the Tower Hill Community Park.
