SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Berwyn Yates

Formerly of Shelbyville, IL

Berwyn D. Yates, 79, of Altamont, formerly Shelbyville, died at 9:55 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 in Carle  Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Dr. Roger Marshall officiating.  Visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Tuesday.  Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard.  Memorials may be given to the Shelby Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Mr. Yates was born on February 24, 1933 in Findlay, OH, the son of Willard Franklin and Pearl Evelyn White Yates.  He graduated from Sullivan High School in the Class of 1951.  He then attended Southern Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University.  Berwyn was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in the 44th Infantry Division/74th Engineer Combat Platoon.  He was twice decorated while serving in Korea.  When Berwyn returned from the service, he worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company in Decatur for 26 years, retiring in 1992.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville.  He married Lillian Joan Thorton on August 12, 1962.  She died on February 7, 2006.

He is survived by his sons, Paul T. Yates and wife Twila of Effingham and Mark D. Yates and wife Rebecca of Altamont; brother, Willard F. Yates and wife Mary Ruth of Heltonville, IN; sister, Sarah E. Imber and husband Richard of Aurora, CO; eight grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian; granddaughter, Emily; and grandson, Nathanial.

The family thanks Dr. Das Gurujal and Carla for all the care they have given to Berwyn.
