Relay for Life Brings Over $40,500 for Cancer Fight

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Thirteen teams working throughout the past year brought all their efforts together for the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Shelby County Friday evening in Forest Park.

The event totaled $40,522 with more money still coming in.

The Shelby Memorial Hospital team took top fundraising honors with more than $17,000 and earning the sapphire level. The team also was named the “Best Team Theme” by wearing their sapphire colored team shirts and “Best Team Activity”.

The Community Changemakers (Community Banks of Shelby County) was named Best Decorated Campsite with a beach scene including a sand castle and chair. The team also received honors for the “Best Decorated Baton”.

Health Nuts (Shelby County Health Department) was named “Team Costume Award”.

Prior to the opening ceremonies, area cancer survivors were honored with a dinner which was prepared by the Shelbyvillle Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary. during the opening ceremony the survivors walked a special lap led by the VFW Color Guard while teams and community visitors applauded them.

Cancer survivor Jim Boys shared his story of colon cancer during the opening ceremony. Molly and Maggie Yockey sang the National Anthem.

Throughout the evening campsites offered a variety of food and items for sale to visitors. A silent auction for themed baskets was also held.

Children were able to expend their energy on the inflatable playground sponsored by Fox Redi-Mix and Fox-Austin Masonry & Concrete.

Dance Inc. of Stewardson,  The Bends Band from Rantoul, and John McMahom offered entertainment throughout the evening.

More than 300 names of cancer victims - surviving and passed - were read during the Luminaria Ceremony. Tashina Clutter and her sister offered special music for the ceremony. Approximately 375 luminaria bags lined the walkway.

“The committe would like to give a big thank you to all of the teams for all of the their hard work to help us raise the $40,000 plus this year. Shelby Memorial Hospital deserves a big thank you as our top fund raising team. They are awesome. All of the teams deserve thanks for all the hard work they do all year to raise money to help wipe out cancer,” said event co-chair Kathie Storm.

“Even though we were down on the number of teams I think that the amount we raised shows their hard work and commitment to the Shelby County Relay For Life. I am also very proud of the committee and all of the time and energy they put into the Relay. They are the greatest people to work with. Also I want the thank the people of Shelby County for the support of Relay as they make this event a success by coming out and supporting us.

“I would also like to thank the Shelbyville Fireman and Ladies for all of their help not only with survivor dinner but also in helping the inflatables which was sponsored by Fox Redi-Mix and Fox-Austin Masonery and Concrete. A thank you to Jim Boys, the band The Bends, John McMahon, Kerry Campbell (always our DJ), Sloan Implement (our Stage), Wade's and the list goes on. To the City of Shelbyville for the use of the Lion's Building and to the Senior Buiolding. And I must not forget the guys at Forest Park as they do a wonderful job setting up the track and everything else need for the night of Relay. There are too many to mention and they all deserve a big thank you from us,” Storm said.
