SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

The National FFA Organization (also known as Future Farmers of America) involves a future in which all agricultural education students will discover their passion in life and build on that insight to chart the course for their educations, career, and personal future. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. Agricultural Education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources systems.
The Shelbyville High School FFA chapter under direction of Mrs. Mandy Totten participates in events at state, local and natural levels such as soil judging, poultry judging, and dairy judging.
The most recent event the FFA competed in was soil judging which was held at a Shelby county. The team members include Luke Furr, Colton Mahnke, Elliott Smithson, Devin Miner, Brooke Eisenbarth, Matt Warner, and Alissa Hudson. The team finished first place overall out of 14 teams. Top individuals included senior Luke Furr, third place finishing overall.
In soil judging schools divide their students into teams of four students. Each student is scored individually and with their team. In the Rural contest, students answer questions about land description, land capability, land use, and recommended conservation practices. Land description sub-categories included slope, erosion or depth of topsoil, texture of surface soil, depth of soil, and natural drainage ability. In the Urban event, students answer questions about soil properties, asked to give an overall rating for the land, and submit recommended management practices. The soil properties included slope, landform, flood hazard, soil stability, soil texture, depth to seasonal high water table, and depth to bedrock.
Poultry judging is held in the spring time, the classes to be judged are exterior eggs, ready to cook, past production hens, parts I.D., and candled or broken out eggs. A judging team shall consist of three of four FFA members. Only scores of three highest members will be considered in awarding team prize.
Participating in dairy judging provides an excellent opportunity for youth to not only increase their knowledge of evaluating dairy cattle, but to also develop and valuable communication skills that will be useful for a lifetime. FFA dairy judging contests occurs in the spring time.
FFA is a fun activity to become involved with at your school. The events and activities in FFA prepare you for a future job. In addition, it prepares a source of scholarship potential for college. If you are interested in agriculture or becoming a member you should talk with the advisor or upper class member in the FFA.
