SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
By Michael Courtain
What do you know about our welding program here at Shelbyville High School? Last year it was its big kick off as an active group in the community. They make lighted Christmas Trees to help the financial problem that the welding program was having. Although the class had trouble keeping up with demand, a great first year was in place and they made enough money to update most of their equipment and purchase supplies for this year. This year the focus has been better organization and ensuring the welding equipment is up to date.
The process has been improved this year to reduce waste and because an organized unit is a more productive unit it is already showing improvement. This year they are making use of all the material that they have access to. In addition a storage system has been put in place, because the metal is used within a couple of days. Also, everyone is cross trained to use all machines which in turn allows them to produce more smoothly in production in case some one is absent from school. Last year they had two or three people putting together the trees while everyone else cut the metal, but now they are taking turns in welding and cutting. They base the amount of metal they cut by the amount they need to make the trees look good and work properly. All the trees go through a high quality inspection to make sure that the trees will be a really good quality. The cost for a Christmas trees for $35.00 a piece. If you would like to purchase one, go to the Shelbyville High School office or call the school at (217) 774-3926.
This year future expansions are also being made to the department, yes they make the trees, but they want to make more objects for different seasons. Currently in the works is a prototype and jig to make pumpkins. Although they will not be able to be purchased this year a future project will be ready for next fall. Also, concept projects that the students design are in the works, but they have to be feasible and sellable. A cool thing this year is that the welding classes are teaming up with Accounting and Introduction into Business classes so that they will be able to advertise the trees and be like an actual business.
One of the most exciting things about welding class this year is that it is Dual Credit through Lake Land College. It will give students a good idea if this is what they want to do for their life and give credit to welding to graduate college. This will also get kids interested in the welding program for Shelbyville High School and will engage the students thinking about their plans after high school. Because the welding class here is doing so well they are planning to enter a student into a welding competition. Matthew White would be suitable for this competition, which includes other high schools and some colleges. Mathew is showing a remarkable amount of work and time in the shop on his project, a 6'10” ball hitch trailer; this makes him a remarkable candidate to compete in this welding competition
Well I can tell the welding program is doing much better this year and I think as a community we should support this class by purchasing their Christmas trees and putting them up in our yard during the holidays and proudly state that the Shelbyville High School welding classes made this. So come to the Shelbyville High School office and purchase one today!
