SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
By: Zach Karraker
I believe it is very clear to the average citizen of Shelbyville that after suffering through months of extreme heat and humidity, an unbearable drought, and no Monday Night Football that Fall is finally here. The air often smells like rain, leaves are changing to beautiful hues of orange and brown, and there is the long anticipated return of Monday Night Football. Aside from these things, Fall in Shelbyville means something else. Since the beginning of the school year, the choirs of Shelbyville High School have been practicing and preparing to put on their annual Fall Concert.
The concert takes place on October 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the High School auditorium. The event is entirely free to the general public and promises a large variety of genres in the presented music. Choir director Patty Finks says this is a demonstration concert and is usually very laid back. Some of the artists' music to be performed includes Lee Ann Womack, Bill Joel, as well as a very popular song by Queen. There are approximately sixty high school choir students total in all three choirs combined. Each one will perform three or four songs.
Student Teacher Ms. Julie Martin and Choir Director Mrs. Patty Finks will share in the duties of directing the choirs as well as accompanying them instrumentally. The concert is also expected to have several other guest solo instrumentalists that will help accompany a song or two.
When not assisting in teaching here, Ms. Martin studies at Eastern Illinois University. She has taught for eight weeks here and will return on the night of the concert in order to help direct the choirs. I asked her what she has enjoyed most about her teaching experience here and she said she very much enjoyed working with the always interesting Mrs. Finks as well as getting to know all of her students.
For those that were skeptical about attending the Fall Concert before reading this article, I hope I have managed to sway your opinion. I have no doubt in my mind that any attendee will thoroughly enjoy themselves at the event.
