SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
By Rylee Elzer
Music is a part of most students' lives in one way or another. Many listen to Ipods or blast their car radios, but as for Shelbyville High School Choir students, they like to show off their talent.
IMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) is a district choir that is made up of high school students. Twelve Shelbyville High School choir members signed up to audition to be in this choir. Five of the twelve students made it into the choir. Mrs. Patty Finks and Miss Julie Martin accompanied them to the auditions. They arrived at Effingham Middle School at 8:30 AM. Shelbyville had to wait until 11:45 AM to be done with all of their auditions. The audition consisted of two song selections, Lullaby of Birdland and Come Home. It also consisted of sight-reading and scatting (putting random syllables to a beat they give you). The twelve students who went were Molly Yockey, David Thompson, Rachel West, Monica Griesmer, Laura Flach, Cassie Jennings, Tori Honningman, Ben Saxton, Kayley Brown, Hannah Apple, Jessie Denning, and myself, Rylee Elzer. The students selected for IMEA were Rachel West, Monica Griesmer, David Thompson, Kayley Brown, and Hannah Apple. The band also went to IMEA. The students selected to go were Kaitlyn Hopper and Eric Bowers. Kaitlyn was the only student to make IMEA band for Shelbyville.
Not just the choir students previously mentioned are important and worth watching, all choir students are! Join them October 24, 2011 at Eastern Illinois University for the Youth and Harmony Festival. The concert starts at 6:30 PM, and all choir students are able to attend. They sing with other choirs from high schools around the area. They work with two quartets (a group of four people singing together), one set for the girls and one set for the boys. All students seem to enjoy the festival and work hard all day practicing for the concert that night.
Whether you have a choir student as your child or not, it's great fun to watch them sing and have a great time entertaining the public. Come support the Shelbyville choir this year in all they do for the public!
