SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville Ram football has had extraordinary success this summer in 7 on 7 competitions, going 16-3, winning one tournament, and taking 2nd place in two more tournaments.
“We are doing real good, so far,” said head coach Stan Wienke. “We went to Pana and played Pana and Nokomis. We played in a tournament in Urbana and placed second. We went to Central A&M and won that tourney. We had a tournament at Mattoon last weekend and played some bigger programs.
“We played Terre Haute South and won. We played Champaign Central and won. We played Terre Haute North and lost on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game for the championship. We played Urbana at Urbana and Rich South. We played Champaign St. Thomas More and they beat us for the championship.”
Two of the three Ram losses have come in championships games of the 7 on 7 tournaments. The other loss came in a head-to-head match-up with Mattoon.
The Rams have most of their players from last year and have missed some of them due to baseball games. They took second at Mattoon without Jake Keown.
“We’ve played a ton of sophomores this year and they are playing well for us,” Coach Wienke said. “The knowledge they have of what we’re trying to do is so far ahead of last year. Tyler Hendryx, Wyatt Fox, and Lucas Duckett played well. We have a bunch of receivers that are playing good.”
“Last weekend, we were running a lot of crossing patterns,” Wienke said. “One of our players came up to me and said, ‘Coach I think we’re playing better.’ He said the Terre Haute players were getting beat and the coach was yelling at them saying ‘Where is our safety?’ The safety responded, ‘I can’t tell where they are all coming from!”
Coach Wienke said they just have to get the linemen tuned in now.
The Rams were to play their final practice 7 on 7 at Arcola on Tuesday, then have a 2-day mini camp on Wednesday and Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m.
The team has had short practices on Mondays and worked on their passing game for the 7 on 7s.
Wednesday’s mini-camp was canceled due to the extreme heat. Thursday, they were expected to work on defense, their running game, and formations.
