SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville won their latest OVC tourney match-up against Warrensburg, but it was a weird one, with Shelby holding on to win, 42-41.
Shelbyville is one of the best defensive teams in the conference, so the low-scoring game wasn’t that weird, but the way the Rams scored their points on offense was different.
Brody Bence, the Ram leading scorer averaging almost 16 points a game, was held to just six points only scoring twice and getting to the line just once. Nate Standerfer, the Ram arc angel (45-3s), dialed in once from long distance, but finished with just seven points.
Thanks to Tucker Schwengel, the Ram lunch bucket rebounder (6.4 boards a game), banger, and paint policeman, they pulled it out. Schwengel had a season-high and game-high 15 points, taking the Rams to the win. Schwengel scored six times from the floor and made all three of his free throws.
The Rams had one of their good starts in the 1st, blitzing Warrensburg on a 13-2 run. But in the 2nd, the Cardinals took flight and scored 17 points. Warrensburg out-shot Shelby from the arc 6 to 2 in the game. The Rams still scored a dozen and hung on to their lead at the break, 25-19.
Then the Ram offense slowed to a crawl in the 2nd half, scoring just 17 points in 16:00. Their defense saved them. Warrensburg cut the lead to just two points in the 3rd on a 13-9 run, 34-32. Down the stretch, it was guts over glory as the hand-to-hand between the two teams limited their combined out-put to 17 points. Warrensburg had a 38-35, but Standerfer finally connected from the arc to knot the game. The Rams edged Warrensburg on a final 4-3 finish, despite the Cardinals winning the final period 9-8.
Shelbville (14-8) plays Tolono on Friday in the OVC consolation championship. Shelbyville beat Clinton in the tourney, then lost to higher-seed Central A&M, before they nipped Warrensburg to make the consolation title game. Tolono edged Maroa, 46-45, on Wednesday.
