SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Central A&M, which has knocked off CHBC and Pana and is ranked 3rd in the state in Class A, had to hold off a late charge by Sullivan on Monday night, 62-53.
The Lady Raiders had the game in hand in the 1st half. They started true to pattern with a 17-11 early run. The beat went on in the 2nd with a 20-10 run and the Raiders leading by 16 points at the break, 37-21.
Even in the uptempo 3rd period, where Sullivan scored 17 points, the Raiders were still in charge. A&M led by 18 points heading into the 4th period, 56-38. Then the Raider lead started to take on water.
Asia Morrison was getting penetration and compromising the formerly stiff Raider defense. Down the stretch, Sullivan went on a 15-6 run, slashing the 18-point lead to under double-digits, before the Raiders changed their defense and righted the ship. A&M stopped the bleeding at a 9-point margin of victory.
Allie Heaton had a career-high 23 points in a game that went up and down the floor at a fever pace. Heaton scored nine times from the floor, including a trey hat trick. She also made two free throws.
Sarah Bailey, always a tough competitor, but not seen as a leading scorer, had her best offensive game of the season. She also scored 20 points, by scoring nine times from the floor and making two free throws.
They carried the weight of the scoring with no other Raider in double figures. Taylor Jordan had seven points with one 3-pointers. Genny Rose Stringer and Rachel Townsend also had threes.
Sullivan was led by Morrison with 17 points, scoring eight times from the floor. Emily Neuhauser was the second threat, scoring 15 points, including her own trey hat trick. Massey and Boyer followed with eight points, each.
Neither team relied much on free throws in a wide open floor game. Each team made just eight free throws.
Central A&M (6-2) was to play Tolono on Thursday in a conference game beginning with a JV prelim at 6 p.m.
