SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
The Daily Union Athletes of the Week had success over the weekend.
Sophmore Wyatt Fox (138 lbs) of Shelbyville took 2nd place at the prestigious PORTA wrestling tourney on Saturday. Fox is was ranked 8th in the state prior to the meet and was 4-1.
He won 8-0 to start the tourney, then beat state-ranked senior Mark Breedlove of Kewanee, 6-3. In the title bout, Fox was out-pointed 9-1. Fox is now 7-2.
Senior Josh Hicks (170) of Shelbyville also stepped up at PORTA, placing 3rd. Hicks won a 1st period pin (1:52) then lost 1-0 to his Litchfield nemesis, Blankenship, 1-0. He followed that with back-to-back pins (2:45, 2:33). He had Blankenship again in the 3rd place match and beat him, 3-1. Hicks is now 8-2.
On Friday, Windsor freshman guard Tristan Warner had a break-out game at home against Brownstown. Warner scored a game-high 27 points in the 3-point win, 62-59.
He drained six 3-pointers with two deuces, for 22 points from the floor. He also made 5-of-11 at the line. Warner is known for won the 8th grade state discus championship last spring (139-7).
Wyatt Fox is the son of Shane and Leah Fox of Shelbyville. Josh Hicks is the son of Jacob and Wanda Hicks of Shelbyville. Tristan Warner is the son of Jim Warner of Gays and Jennifer Warner of Sullivan.
