SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
A few years ago Stew-Stras and Pana played the second-highest scoring game in IHSA history. Stew-Stras played another historic game, a 4-OT game, the only one ever in an NTC tourney. The game at Pana on Tuesday didn't fall into an historic category like the other Comet games.
Each of the teams had two main scorers in double figures and the rest of the crews played lesser roles. Pana got 40 points from their top two scorers and Stew-Stras got just 29 points from the top two. Pana had three more intermediate scorers and the Comets just one.
Pana couldn't extricate themselves form the Comets in the 1st period and led just 10-8. Zach Rincker and Jason Becker scored twice, each, for all the Comet points. Pana got two scores from McMillen and solo buckets from Allen Kile, Mitch Beyers, and Tyler Epley.
Both teams cranked it up in the 2nd frame and went on a mad dash, scoring 43 points in 8:00. The Comets scored 20 points, as Nick Ferris was the arc angel Nicholas, connecting on three consecutive 3-point plays. He then made two free throws, then a deuce and a fourth trey. Ferris scored 16 of the Comets' 20 points and 16 of his team-high 19. Jason Fry and Becker added solo twos.
Pana matched Ferris' best quarter of his career with 18 points from two players. Mitche Beyers put a huge down payment on his game-high 24 points with 10 points in the 2nd. He hit a trey, then made a 3-point play. He had a deuce, then two free throws. McMillen added eight points on four buckets. Epley scored again and DaTeng Lin scored, giving Pana just a 5-point lead at the break, 33-28.
Pana finally got separation in the 3rd period with a 14-5 run. Beyers added another seven points on two twos and a trey. McMillen scored twice and Epley scored once. The Comets got a fifth trey from Ferris and just one more bucket from Becker.
Pana led by 14 heading into the 4th, 47-33. Stew-Stras couldn't get much going from the floor in the final frame. Only Zach Rincker scored from the floor, on a trey. They got the rest of their six points from the line. Brandon Helmuth made 2-of-3 and Austin Carson made 2-of-4.
Pana increased their lead down the stretch with a 15-point period. Beyers made a deuce and a trey, Avery Hrabak had two scores and two free throws, and Kile connected from the arc.
