CHBC Beats Cobden At Super-Sectional. On To State!

JOHN CURTIS - Daily Union Sports Editor

The CHBC Lady Hornets won their first-ever regional 10 days ago. They won their first-ever sectional last Thursday. Tonight they won their first-ever super-sectional. And, now they are headed to their first-ever appearance at the Girls Class A State Tournament. CHBC beat Cobden in the Salem 1A Super-Sectional Monday night, 54-38.

CHBC was not favored. They were the Cinderella team which had never been to the ball before. Cobden was a super-sectional team last year and they were ready to move on to the next level and expected to. But, Cinderella not only made it to the ball, she knocked off the evil step-sisters and was crowned super-sectional royalty.

The Hornets shrugged off big-game jitters and established a 6-point lead in the first period, 14-8. The just kept itup in the second period and posted an 11-point lead at the break, 29-18, doing to Cobden, what Cobden did to Woodlawn in their sectional final. CHBC kept on extending their lead in the third to go up by 16 points heading in the final frame, before they reserved their State berth. Down the stretch, the Hornets matched Cobden's effort in their last desperate attempt to make it to State. Cobden fell short of State by one game for the second year in a row.

Cobden had the experience, CHBC had the young guns. Once again, fab freshman Micah Jones led the Hornets in scoring, putting up 18 points. She was followed in scoring pure shooter, sophomore Faith Wendte with 12 points.

CHBC (26-4) will play Jacksonville Routt at the IHSA Girls Class A State Tournament semifinals at Redbird Arena in Bloomington-Normal on Friday at 12:15 p.m. Two years ago, Jacksonville Ruott lost to Central A&M; in the third place game at State. They have reloaded and are returning to State.

Earlier this fall BCCH (Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick) 7th grade girls (15-7) placed second in the state in the 7AA State Tournament.
