SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Cut the head off the snake and the snake will die. Monticello limited Ram center Brody Bence’s scoring and, despite other players stepping up, the Sages posted a double-digit win over Shelbyville on Friday, 53-37.
Bence was held to just two free throws and missed those. Nate Standerfer, the 3-point specialist for the Rams was held to just one triple. The Sages defensive effort held the Rams under 40 points.
Monticello started the game with a 16-6 run and set the tone. They increased their lead to 14 point by the break.
The 3rd period was the same story as the 2nd, Monticello in control and upping their lead to 17 points. In the final frame, Shelbyville finally played Monty even and cut the lead to 16 point at the final buzzer.
Shelbyville only got to the line six times in the game and made just one free throw (17%). Monticello got to the line 17 times and made 14 of them (83%).
Point guard Jake Keown led the Rams with 10 points, all from the field. He had a pair of deuces and a pair of treys. The other guard Spencer Shadwell followed with nine points, connecting all three times from the arc. Tucker Schwengel also stepped up with seven points.
Shelbyville hosts two NTC conference teams back-to-back this week. They host Neoga on Tuesday, then Stew-Stras on Friday.
