UFC: Bigfoot v. Browne On FX Tonight

SHELBYVILLE, IL. —

On Friday, October 5, the UFC will once again bring MMA to cable television with UFC on FX 5: Bigfoot vs Browne.

The main event will feature two heavyweight giants in Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva facing off against up and coming Travis "Hapa" Browne.

In the MMA world, Antonio Silva is known for two things: his size and his crushing defeat of Fedor Emelianenko. It was Silva's defeat of Emelianenko that thrust him into the MMA spotlight.

Though Fedor had been defeated by Fabricio Werdum via a miraculous submission, it was Bigfoot's impeccable grappling and terrifying ground strikes that left the Russian legend's face a mess. Unfortunately, for the large Brazilian, his fortunes have not stayed high after that momentous bout in Strikeforce.

After defeating Emelianenko, Silva was unfortunately the first big name victim of rising star Daniel Cormier. The former Olympian felled "Bigfoot" with a crushing right hand, knocking him out cold.

Though Silva would still be brought to the UFC later on, his original opponent of Roy Nelson was replaced due to the numerous injuries that plagued UFC 146. Instead, Silva ran into Cormier's teammate, the much more dangerous former champion, Cain Velasquez. Silva would once again be stopped in the first round.

Travis Browne, on the other hand, is a rising star in the heavyweight division. Debuting in 2010, he crushed British heavyweight and former kickboxer James McSweeney, and has been on a tear ever since.

Though he would have a dull draw with French striker Cheick Kongo, he would press forward with beautiful stoppages of Chad Griggs and Stefan Struve, and would win a hard fought decision against Rob Broughton. Needless to say, the 30 year old Browne would make a major jump in the ratings if he were to beat Silva.

UFC on FX 5 will broadcast live on FX at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time. Preliminary bouts can be viewed beginning at 5:30 on Fuel TV.

The card also features a co-main event between returning veteran Jay Hieron and welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger, and a flyweight title eliminator between John Dodson and Jussier Formiga.
