SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Cowden-Herrick Jr. High basketball came close on Monday to getting a sweep for Christmas, but it was not to be. Hornet 7th beat St. Pat 7th, 52-27, but St. Pat 8th came back to beat the Hornet 8th, 49-48.
Hornet 7th was led by Coltin Rauch, Kaleb Barfield and Brody Phillips, all in double figures. Rauch had a game-high 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Barfield had 15, including 3-of-4 at the line. Phillips had 10 points, with one trey.
Rauch got off early with four of his nine baskets in the 1st. Barfield made two free throws, then three buckets to combine with Rauch for a 16-4 Hornet lead after one. They took the foot off the accelerator in the 2nd. Phillips scored three times and Barfield twice. St. Pat’s kept from falling further back, still 13 points back at the break, 26-13.
In the 3rd period the Hornets swarmed again on a 17-4 run. Rauch scored 13 of the Hornets 17 points. He opened with a trey, then a deuce. He hit another triple, then a two, then competing a 3-point play at the line. Phillips nailed a three and Hunter Watson made a free throw.
Leading by 26 points into the 4th, 43-17, the Hornets pulled in their stingers and still won by 25 at the buzzer. Barfield made a 3-point play Phillips split a pair at the line and Blaze Russell made 3-of-4 at the line then a two for all five of his points down the stretch.
Ian Harbert led St. Pat’s with seven points, five of which came in the 2nd period on a two and a 3-point play. Matt LeDuc and Conner Schmitz followed with five points each.

The 8th grade game became a barn-burner. Teh two teams were tied at the end of the 1st, 12-12, then the Hornets build a 5-point lead at the break, 33-28. They upped the margin to nine points heading into the 4th, 36-27. However, the Hornet lead evaporated as St. Pat’s caught fire.
The Hornets scored 12 points down the stretch, but St. Pat’s exploded for 22 points in just six minutes. The two teams scored almost six points every minute. St. Pat’s scored four points every minute by themselves.
The Hornets were up by 9 points to start the 4th. Pana scored six baskets in the 4th and Cowden-Herrick four. That trimmed the 9-point lead to five points. St. Pat also shot 16 free throws in the 4th, making 10 of them. The Hornets only shot six free throws in the 4th and made four. That whittled away the Hornet lead from seven points to St. Pat leading by one at the buzzer.
Konner Blackerby led C-H with 15 points, scoring six in the 4th. Coltin Rauch scored 11 points after scoring 21 points in the 7th grade game. Rauch’s points all came in the 2nd half, six in the 3rd and five in the 3rd. Noah Sandiford and Aaron Nohren had nine points, each. Both had four points in the 2nd half.

High schools from over the state of Illinois made their way down for the first day of the girls state track meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Defending class 1A champion Central A&M sent 12 total athletes to the meet this season, and started this years’ girls track meet off well by winning 6 events individually and 1 team race.
