Okaw Ladies Go Flat

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — Okaw Valley started like gangbusters against Blue Ridge in the opening round of the Okaw Valley Holiday Tournament on Saturday, leading by 13. But in the 2nd half, Okaw they were just busted, losing 48-39.

Okaw guard Abigail Weybright had a deuce, then a pair of 3-pointers in the 1st period. Paige Harlin cashed in another trey and Amanda McClain scored twice from the floor, for a 17-11 lead. Blue Ridge got 5  of Gabby pearl’s 16 points in the 1st, plus a pair of buckets from Jessie Brandt and one from Cheve Benes.

Okaw kept up the pace with a 13-6 run in the 2nd period. McClain scored two more times and split a pair at the line, giving her 9 of her 15 points in the 1st half. Weybright dialed in for another long distance basket and Amy Orris hit a trey. Shelby dash capped the Okaw scoring in the first half with a deuce.

Blue Ridge got just two buckets from pearl and one from Brandt in the 2nd, to trail by 13 at the half, 30-17.

Out of the locker room their was a sea change. It was Blue Ridge that came out like gangbusters. They put on a 19-4 run to erase the 13-point lead and take a 2-point lead heading into the 4th. Brandt scored 10 points on four field goals and 2-of-2 at the line. Pearly had a 3-point play and two more buckets.

Okaw got two buckets from McClain and that was it to trail going into the final frame, 36-34. Okaw was stymied again in the 4th on a 12-5 run and finished flummoxed.



Weybright sank her fourth 3-pointer in the 4th and McClain had a deuce, while Blue Ridge made 8-of-10 free throws and a couple solo twos to ice the game.  

McClain and Weybright led Okaw with 15 and 14 points, respectively. The Okaw leaders scored 20 of their combined 29 points in the 1st half.

McClain scored seven times from the floor and Weybright four times from the arc, plus a deuce. Paige Harlin had a trey and 2-of-2 at the line for five points.

Blue Ridge was led by Brandt with 20, including eight field goals and 4-of-4 at the line. Pearl finished with 16, seven buckets and 2-of-3 at the line.

Okaw was just 3-of-9 at the line, while Blue Ridge was 12-of-16 (75%) in a 9-point win. Okaw Valley moved to the consolation bracket and will play next after Christmas.

    Athletes from all over the state of Illinois showed up to Eastern Illinois University for the IHSA Class A  Boys State Track Meet preliminaries on Thursday. The Shelby Area sent a cadre of 11 different athletes on to Saturday's state finals.
