SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
Shelbyville wrestling ran their dual record this season to 16-4 on Tuesday night after getting by Robinson, 38-26, and dominating Hillsboro, 68-3.
“We won both matches,” said Ram coach Greg Harkins. “We looked good on our feet, but against Robinson we did things on the ground to get us turned and lose some matches we shouldn’t have. After the Robinson match, its like we woke up and said we better get going!”
The Rams kicked it in gear and ran away with the Hillsboro match.
The Robinson matches did have some challenges involved. Freshman phenom Garrett Brachbill (21-1) bumped up to 120 pounds to face a Robinson senior with a measure of strength, Stiffle, who was a state qualifier last year. Brachbill was pushed and lost, 9-3.
“I think when we meet him again, we’ll be able to make some adjustments and beat him,” Coach Harkins said.
Heavyweight Elliott Smithson (18-6) tried cutting weight down to 220 for the 1st time this season.
and wrestled in one of the most competitive matches of the night against Keeler. Keeler has a record of 26-2 and is ranked 6th in the state.
“It was a very good match,” Coach Harkins said. “The match was tied 5-5 and, in the last five seconds, Keeler got a take down for the win, 7-5.
Coach Harkins wanted to commend the wrestling of Lucas Duckett both against Robinson and Hillsboro on Tuesday.
“Duckett wrestled phenomenal,” Harkins aid. “It was the most offense he had put up all year. Usually he wins 5-2. He opened up on his feet. We’ve been working on that. He was comfortable and confident.”
Duckett (21-5) beat his Robinson foe by a score of 24-4. He then beat the Hillsboro foe, 13-4. Duckett stockpiled 37 points in the two matches for a huge change in his usual scoring.
Sophomore Wyatt Fox (20-5) won both of his 138 pound matches on Tuesday by a pin in just 40 seconds, and by an 11-6 decision. Adam Hudson (19-2) won both of his 145-pound matches. The first was a forfeit, but the second was by a pin (4:59). That gave Hudson his 14th and 15th straight wins.
Senior Josh Hicks (20-7) also won both of his matches. Hicks beat Berty of Robinson by a typical score of 5-3. Against Hillsboro he was ahead, but then had to fight against a game opponent, finally winning, 18-13.
Senior Eric Williams got to go against Hillsboro and made the most of it. The 126-pound Ram defeated Law by a major decision, 21-8. After Brachbill took the quality loss to Stiffle, he bounced back against Hillsboro by beating Cieweg in a 1st period pin (1:24). Zac Isaacs bounced back from a Robinson defeat to pin Dewitt of Hillsboro (5:19).
Mitch Barna (182) was not cleared to wrestle on Tuesday, but is cleared to wrestle on Thursday night at home against Mattoon and Mt. Zion.
