CHBC Beats Salem In Consolation Semi

SHELBYVILLE, IL. — CHBC lost their first game at the Highland Tourney to Hillsboro by two points. They came back and won the second game over Troy Triad by 44 points. In the consolation semi, they faced Salem. It wasn’t close, but it wasn’t a blowout either. It was a solid win for the Hornets, 62-54.

All-state center Micah Jones was in a scoring contest with Salem’s Morgan Hawkins. Jones scored 17 points with a 3-pointer and 2-of-4 at the line, but Hawkins scored 18 with two triples and 6-of-8 at the line. That’s where Jones’ teammate Ava Paruleski came in.

Paruleski tipped the scales in the Hornets favor with a game-high and season-high 20 points. Paruleski  recorded a trey hat trick, scored three times inside the arc and went to the line making 5-of-7 shots.

CHBC took a characteristic 16-10 lead in the 1st and survived a Salem push in the 2nd to extend their lead to nine points at the break, 33-24. Salem kept pushing back in the 3rd and cut the lead to six points facing the final frame, 50-44. It was defensive struggle in the final 8:00 and CHBC gutted out the 8-point win.

For the second game in a row, reserve guard Chandler Ward stepped up her scoring. She was the third Hornet in double figures, scoring 11 points, including a triple. Autumn Riley was almost the fourth Hornet in double figures, scoring eight points. She took a licking and kept on ticking. She earned six free throws and buried them all.

In a game where the Hornets needed to make their free throws they did, making 13-of-17 (77%). Salem was 14-of-23 (60%).

CHBC (13-5) plays in the Highland Tourney Consolation Championship Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
