Sectional Stars On To State

Five area Junior Highs represented at the St. Anthony Class A Sectional track meet on Saturday and of those five, Neoga won the sweepstakes, qualifying the most entries for the IESA Class A State Meet this Friday and Saturday, although, Stew-Stras is sending more athletes.

Neoga qualified eleven different entries to the state meet, seven from the 7th grade (2 girls entries, 5 boys entries) and four from the 8th grade (all boys entries). Stew-Stras earned eight entries at State, six from the 7th grade (2 girls entries and 4 boys) and two from the 8th grade (both boys). However, Stew-Stras will take 16 different athletes to State, while Neoga will have 12 or maybe 14 depending on who their relay alternates will be.

Beecher City has four entries going to State, three 7th grade girl entries and one 8th grade boy entry. Windsor has three entries going to State, all 7th grade boys. Cowden-Herrick also has three entries, one 7th grade girl and two 8th grade boy entries.

Neoga’s Seth Kline won the St. Anthony Sectional 7th grade boys hurdles event and was second in the 200 meter dash. He also was part of the 7th grade boys 4x1 relay (Jamie Pearcy, Derek Williamson, Kline, Caleb Wilson) which tied for second. He will go in three events and he almost went in four, placing third in the long jump. Wilson just missed going in the 7th boys 100, placing third, while the Neoga 7th girls 4x2 also just missed a trip to State, taking third.

Neoga’s Bryn Price will also be going in three events. Price won the sectional title in the 8th grade boys quarter and in the high jump. He will also be part of the 8th grade 4x1 relay (Clayton Potter, Gage McKimmy, Jacob Cole, Price).

They placed first at sectional. McKimmy will also be going individually in the 8th boys 800 meters, taking second at St. Anthony.

T.J. Roy won the 7th grade boys long jump by ten inches and heads to State, Erika Roderick claimed the 7th girls shot put title and advances to State, Mikaela Walk was third in the 7th girls 800 meter, but ran a State qualifying time, and Kasey French was second in the 200 dash and heads to State.

Stew-Stras, of their 16 State athletes, has three girls going in two events and three boys going in two events. Hannah Underwood, Nikki Waldorf and Shalyn Wildman will run in two different 7th girls relays and Dennis Day, Alex Baumgarten and Pat Braden will each go in an individual event and a relay.

The Comet 7th 4x200 relay team (Underwood, Waldorf, Wildman and Macy Friese) won the sectional crown, Saturday, then the 7th girls 4x400 team (Underwood, Waldorf, Wildman and Ashley Probst) took second to earn a trip to East Peoria. Braden finished second in the 8th boys quarter and will run with the 8th boys 4x1 relay (Braden, Landon Collins, Luke Rincker, Kyle Helmuth, Henry Ballinger alt.) that took third, but had a State qualifying time.

Day won the 7th boys 200 meter dash, while Baumgarten was second in the 7th boys long jump. Both are part of the 7th boys winning 4x100 relay (Baumgarten, Day, Nic Ferris, Zack Rincker, Blayne Davis alt.). Rincker may have gone in the 7th boys 100, but after a photo finish with Cowden-Herrick’s Jalen Hovis in the preliminaries and qualifying for the sectional finals, Rincker had to withdraw due to a recurring injury. Wade Mathis earned a state berth by tying for the sectional title in the 7th boys shot put.

Beecher City is sending 7th graders Breanna Strauch and Bailey Doty to State in the hurdles after the girls finished 1, 2 at St. Anthony, twice. Strauch took first and second in the finals, then, due to a finalist being left off, they had to run the finals all over again. They still finished 1, 2. They will also go in the 7th girls 4x1 relay (Megan Meier, Doty, Courtney Myers, Strauch), which placed second at St. Anthony. B.C. will also send an 8th boys 4x1 relay to State (Zach Garrison, Jayce Wright, Jeff Vinot, Ben Harder) which took fourth, but had a State qualifying time. The Eagle 8th boys 4x4 also had a near miss, taking third place. Meier just missed in the 7th girls 100 dash, taking third.

Windsor has one boy going to State in three events, almost four and had a relay team earn a trip. Andy Cole was second in both the boys 7th 100 dash and the boys 7th quarter. Ha also is part of the second place boys 7th 4x4 relay team (Jake Gilbert, Cole, Zach Goetz and Jacob Pfeiffer). Cole almost went in the discus, as well, but he placed third. The Trojan 8th girls 4x2 relay also had a near miss for State. The team (Sarah Curtis, Jenny Bullock, Alexis Schubert and Hannah Cole) were fourth, but were just one second off a State-qualifying time.

Cowden-Herrick had one boy earn two sectional titles and one girl earn a trip to State. Hassan Hovis swept the boys 8th sprints at sectional, winning the 100 meters and the 200 meters and heads to State in both. Katlynn Kersey, a Hornet 7th grader, took second in the discus and will head to East Peoria. Trevor Mattka suffered two near misses, taking third in the boys 8th 800 and the shot put. Micha Jones ran away from her heat in the 7th girls 200, but suffered a near miss, finishing in third, by less than a second.

The IESA Class A State Meet will run this Friday and Saturday at EastSide Center.

    Cowden-Herrick volleyball opened their season on the road and opened with a sweep, beating Teutopolis varisty, 25-14, 19-25, 25-15, and the Teutopolis JV, 27-25, 25-22.

    After a decent start to the season in their first two outings, the Rams stumbled at Meadowview Golf Course in Mattoon on Wednesday, losing to Mattoon and Windsor both. Shelby shot 197, while Windsor carded a 187, reversing their loss to Shelby the day before at Pana. Mattoon beat both opponents with a sizzling 165. On Thursday, the Rams improved by 18 strokes (179), but still lost to Arcola-Arthur (167), Meridian (170), and Sullivan (171) in a quad match at Moweaqua where the four teams were separated by just 12 strokes.
