Shelby Electric Swings Big Broom

After having to settle for a split on Friday night, Shelby Electric Coop zapped both their opponents on Monday, pulling out the big broom for a sweep.

SEC beat Macari’s in the opener, 16-4, after six innings, then almost skunked a red hot County Market team, 21-1, in game two. Macari’s bounced back from the game one whooping and smacked the Grocer’s in the mouth early for a 16-8 win.

Shelby Electric scored early against Macari’s to get a cushion, then rallied in the fifth to finish them off on a walk-off home run. Macari’s got a single from Brandon Yoder in the first, but that was it and SEC came to bat.

Nick Danneberger led off the SEC first with a single. Jeremy Piper reached on an error, Kevin Ross singled and Chad Hawkins launched a sac fly with the bases loaded to score a run and take a 1-0 lead. Bill Hubbartt smacked a double to score a run, Jami Kaul singled in a run, Brian Allen singled in a run and Jack Kiley sac-flied in a run for a 5-0 lead. Tony Fox doubled and Gary Gritzmacher singled, but neither man could score in the Macari second.

Clint Hagan singled for SEC with one out in the second. Dustin Theiss singled, but was forced out on a fielder’s choice. With two outs Piper doubled Hagan home, but Danneberger was out at the plate, ending the inning, 6-0 SEC. In the Macari third, Garrett Seaton singled with two outs and Brandon Yoder went deep for a 2-run blast, cutting the lead to 6-2.

SEC left the bases loaded with no run in the third and Macari’s went scoreless in the fourth. SEC extended back to a six-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, when Blake Tucker led off with a single and Theiss walked with two outs. Danneberger reached on an error to load the bases and Piper singled in the two runs, 8-2 SEC.

Neither team scored in the fifth, but in the top of the sixth, Macari’s got those two runs back with two outs. Zach Brown singled to keep the inning alive and Tony Fox went yard to cut the deficit to four, 8-4 SEC. Macari’s was still in it, until SEC came to bat in the fifth. Then it was all over.

Kiley drew a walk and with one out Brad Hagan singled. Clint Hagan then drove in a run. With two outs and SEC leading by five, 9-4, someone threw the switch. Danneberger dribbled a base hit in front of the pitcher and a run scored. Piper lined a single and drove in a run. Ross hit a single and drove in another run. Chad Hawkins singled and drove in a run. The score was then, 13-4, with SEC needing three more runs for a 12-run lead, enough to pull the plug on the game.

Bill Hubbartt launched a pitch towards the space shuttle, driving in the three runs needed with a walk-off homer. SEC scored seven runs with two outs, beginning with a weak infield hit and ending in a 3-run blast. Hubbartt went 4-for-4 with a double, two singles and the walk-off 3-run homer.

Tony Fox was 3-for-3 for Macari’s with a double, a single and a 2-run homer.

To earn the sweep SEC had to beat a red hot County Market team, a task that turned out to be as easy as bagging groceries.

Piper went deep in the first for an early 1-0 lead, but the Market tied it in the bottom half, when Tony Kelly led off with a single, Henry Gatton doubled and Chris Lee sac flied Kelly home, 1-1. That was as close as the game would get, as SEC scored 21 unanswered runs.

In the top of the second, Hubbartt led off with a single, Kaul doubled and Brian Allen hit an RBI-single for what would be the game-winning run, 2-1. Kiley sac flied another run in, then Tucker reached on an error, followed by Brad Hagan reaching on an error. Clint Hagan smacked a 2-run double, Danneberger reached on another error, driving in a run, and Steve Spears singled a run home.

Piper blasted a 3-run home run, his second homer of the game, and it was 10-1, but SEC was not done. With two outs, Hawkins singled, Hubbartt singled and Kaul singled in a run. Allen drew a walk, Kiley singled two runs across and Tucker reached on an error. Both Hagans hit consecutive singles, before the final out of the inning. SEC scored 15 runs in the inning and led 16-1 after just an inning and a half. County Market went down in order in their second and SEC came right back with more offensive voltage.

Spear led off the third, reaching on an error and Piper hit his third homer of the game, a 2-run shot. After two straight outs, Hubbartt hit his second roundtripper of the night, giving SEC a 19-1 lead. Kaul singled and scored on Allen’s single to make it 20-1, after 2 and a half innings. County Market, looking like their first year in the league, went down in order again in the third.

SEC couldn’t get their 20-run lead in the fourth and had to play five. The Grocers went bagless in the fourth and SEC had another chance to pull the plug. Piper hit his fourth home run of the game for the 21-1 lead. SEC held the Market scoreless in the fifth and booked the win. Jeremy Piper was 4-for-4, with four home runs, two solos, a 2-run, and a 3-run.

County Market finally got something going in the nightcap, but not enough to get past Macari’s.

The Grocers got on the board first and went deep twice. Kelly led off the game with a single, then Gatton went long to make it 2-0. With one out, Chris Beals jacked a homer and it was 3-0. They then left the bases loaded and gave the bat to Macari’s.

Garrett Seaton led off with a singe, followed by Travis Reider hitting a single. Fox hit an RBI-single, then Zach Brown hit into a fielder’s choice. The controversial out on the base paths interrupted play and the Macari rally, temporarily. Tony Elam then singled to load the bases with one out. Yoder teed it up and blasted a grand slam to capture the lead for Macari’s, 5-3 after one. Rob Downs’ single was all the Market would get in the second, while Macari’s extended their lead.

With one out Jamie Sims singled and Jordan Gaston hit into a fielder’s choice, but reached on an error. With two outs, Seaton singled in a run. Fox then hammered a 3-run homer to put Macari’s up 9-3 after two. Beals led off with a single for County Market i the third, Dan Allen reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored after a hit by Lehman and a hit by Mapes, 9-4 Macari’s. Yoder reached on an error in the Macari third. Gritzmacher followed suit and then Andy Elam hit an RBI-single, 10-4.

Macari’s made a run at Macari’s in the top of the fourth. Downs singled to start the at bat and Gatton hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Chris lee singled to put two men on and Beals hit his second homer of the game, scoring three and cutting the lead to 10-7. Macari’s failed to score in the bottom half, then neither team would score in the fifth.

Lee singled with one out in the Market sixth followed by consecutive single from Beals and Brian Lange. Lange got the RBI and closed the gap to 10-8 Macari’s. However, the bottom of the sixth saw a Big Mac attack.

Shawn Smith, Jamie Sims, Jordan Gaston and Chadd Gaston had four consecutive hits to start the at bat, with Chadd Gaston driving in a run. Seaton reached on an error to load the bases, then Fox tripled, clearing the bases and putting Macari’s up, 15-8. Zach Brown followed with a double, driving in Fox and capping the scoring at 16-8.

Tony Fox went 3-for-4 for Macari’s with a 3-run homer and a 3-run triple, while Chris Beals went 4-for-4 for County Market, with a solo and a 3-run homer.
