SHELBYVILLE, IL. —
CHBC was up against a dangerous opponent in their bid for yet another regional title on Friday night. But familiarity bred a blowout as CHBC out-classed Altamont, 66-35.
The Altamont Indians upset the Class A #10 team in the state, Central A&M in the semifinal. But Central A&M didn't know Altamont like CHBC did, so the Indians were able to sneak up on them.
However, CHBC and ALtamont are in the same conference and play against each other a couple times a year. The Indians were not able to ambush CHBC. CHBC knew how to beat them. It was like using Winchester repeating rifles against bows and arrows and the Indians didn't have as many weapons.
Altamont had nobody in double figures, while CHBC had three players in double -digits. All-state center Micah Jones scored a game-high 22 points, scoring 10 times from the floor. Faith Wendte had 15 points, including a trey hat trick. Bailey Doty scored 10 points, cashing in once from the arc.
Altamont kept trying to light up the scoreboard from the 3-point line, but they couldn't make the connections, they just one 3-pointer, 10 seconds before the final buzzer. They missed at least 14 attempts from the arc. CHBC sank six triples.
CHBC got the opening tip and scored in the first 10 seconds on a dish from Micah Jones to Faith Wendte under the basket. CHBC made the first eight points. Courtney Myers kicked the ball out to Jones for a baseline jumper, Bailey Doty made a put back and Jones dished inside to Doty for two. Altamont finally got on the board with a Gabby Alwardt bucket after 4:00 of play, 8-2 CHBC.
CHBC finished the 1st with a 6-4 run. Ava Paruleski got a rebound and dished to Jones for two. Jones then put on a spin move and scored at the dish. Altamont made two free throws and a solo bucket. Myers made and interior pass to Jones, who banked in a shot for a 15-6 lead after the 1st. Jones scored eight of her 22 points in the 1st period.
CHBC kept up the pressure on the Indians in the 2nd. It started when Wendte, who scored the first bucket of the game, scored the first bucket of the 2nd, a bomb from downtown, 18-6. Maddy Ohnesorge scored for Altamont, but Jones got the ball at the free throw line on the next possession and drove though a wide open lane and scored, 20-9.
Altamont scored on another drive and CHBC called time-out with 6:24 left in the 2nd, 20-11.
After a couple empty possessions, Jones stole a ball and Myers took off on the break and was fouled at the basket. She buried both free throws to doubled-up Altamont again, 22-11. Altamont's big man, Alwardt got her second foul and had to sit. Jones forced a miss, but Altamont reset the offense and scored.
Jones then got the ball in the lane and was defended. She got it back and missed, then got her own rebound again and finally scored, 24-13. Altamont missed another 3 and Doty stole the ball and brought it coast-to-coast for two and the foul. She converted the 3-point play to double-up Altamont again, 27-13, with 3:25 in the half.
The Indians missed another 3 and Myers fround Wendte inside for two. With 17 seconds in the half, Altamont scored, but Jones was fouled with 3.3 seconds and made 1-of-2 to cap the half-time score at 30-15, doubling up Altamont again. Jones had 13 of her 22 points in the first half.
CHBC already led by 15 at the break. In the 3rd they went on an 18-8 run to up the lead to 25 points. Altamont missed another trey and Myers boxed out on the boards and got the foul. On the other end, Myers rolled to the lane, got drove to the bucket for two. CHBC then stole the ball and Myers got it to Jones for two, 34-15.
Altamont scored inside. Doty dished to Jones who was double-covered, but scored anyway. Altamont missed another 3 and Jones worked a give and go to Doty, who kicked it back to her for two and a 21-point lead, 38-17, with 5:45 left in the 3rd.
Jones then swatted away a shot. Wendte then teed up her second 3-pointer, 41-17. Paruleski stole a ball, then Doty stole a ball. Paruleski stole another ball and brought it to the rin for two and a 26-point lead, 43-17, with 4:15 in the 3rd.
Jones swatted another shot away. Altamont missed a 3 and Jones went to the line, making 1-of-2. Macy Wendling mad two free throws for Altamont, but Jones made another spin move from the wing passed two defenders and banked the two, 46-19.
Altamont missed a 3 and Jones sat out the last 1:51 of the 3rd. Emily Wheeler nailed a long two for a 29-point lead, 48-19.
Altamont drove and scored and with 19 seconds left in the period, Spilker made two free throws, cutting the deficit to 25 heading into the 4th, 48-23.
Jones re-entered the game and defended Altamont's first shot. Wheeler then rolled through the lane, got the ball, and made the lay-up. Jones stole a ball then Altamont missed two more 3 attempts. Jones skipped a pass to Wheeler, who lined up a trey and buried it for a 30-point lead, 53-23, with 5:18 left in the game.
On the next possession, Jones passed across the lane to Wendte who was swooping towrdas the basket and made a revesre lay-up. Aleardt made two free throws, but CHBC countered with another triple from Doty at the key for a 33-point lead, 58-25. Altamont called time with 4:18 to play.
Altamont came out in a full-court press and CHBC had to call time. After the time-out, they pulled off the press and Jones got the ball to Wendte, who struck from the arc for the third time, 61-25.
Altamont scored off a steal, then missed yet another trey. At the Hornet end, Jones set a pick for Wheelerat the free throw line and rolled to the bucket, got the pass and scored at the rim, 63-27 with 2:30 to play.
CHBC called time and put in substitutions. Paruleski had a shot blocked, but on the inbound play she buried a trey for a 39-point lead, 66-27. Over the last 1:48 of the game, Altamont scored a two, two free throws and a triple, cutting the final deficit back to 31-points, against CHC reserves.
CHBC (25-3) heads to the Hume Shiloh Sectional semifinals to play Tuscola at 6 p.m. on Monday. Decatur LSA plays Neoga in the other semi at 8:10 p.m.
